Juneteenth Hike: Black History and the Legacy of Slavery in NYC

Details

AMC celebrates Juneteenth with 3 events on Saturday: 2 hikes exploring NYC sites significant to Black history and the 5th Annual Juneteenth Jubilee. Register for each hike separately.

The morning hike from 9am-12pm will start in Central Park at the site of Seneca Village, a free black community forced to move to make way for Central Park. Heading north through Central Park, we will learn about other memorials to important figures in Black history, then continue into Harlem visiting memorials to orator / social reformer Frederick Douglass and social activist Harriet Tubman.

We’ll conclude our hike at the 5th Annual Juneteenth Jubilee on 127th St. from 12pm-3pm, an event supported by AMC and featuring food, dance, jazz, the NYC Federation of Black Cowboys, and other family-friendly events. Everyone is welcome to stay for the fun! If you missed the morning hike, register for a walk to Explore Seneca Village in Central Park from 3pm-5pm.

The morning hike will take place on paved paths/sidewalks and a hardened gravel road, with minimal elevation change. Bring adequate water to stay hydrated, two liters recommended. Total hike distance: 3 miles. Total hike time: 3 hours. There will be a brief introduction to AMC and today's route. Walk departs no later than 9:15 am.

Register for this hike by clicking HERE. Check Your Registration Confirmation Email For Meeting Place, OR first 40 participants to arrive.
