AWESOME VIEWS AND FUN ON BEAR MOUNTAIN HIKE AND MORE FROM THE INN (VIGOROUS)

Details

We will enjoy sensational views as we hike up Bear Mountain on the newly rebuilt Appalachian trail, which was the first section of this iconic trail originally opened in October 1923. Continuing on the AT, we then have lunch on the moon rocks with its fabulous views and exit the park on the reopened portions of the 1777 and SBM trails, which takes us back to the Bear Mountain Inn. There we can top off the hike with mouthwatering Panda Paws ice cream at the Hiker's Cafe, and visit the Bear Mountain Traders Post, Carousel, Zoo, and other fun places on the grounds. There will be easy access back to Manhattan by bus at 5:19 from the Inn, and since we expect to finish early, we can try to arrange rides back to Manhattan or nearby train stations.

This isn’t a beginner’s hike and is not suitable for slow hikers who cannot keep up or stay with the group on a hot summer day. We will hike at a steady, moderate pace, not super-fast but not slow, over a distance of around 7 miles, with some steep hills (which many find challenging; hence, the vigorous rating) on hiking trails in the woods and on rocky terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 1500 feet. Hikers should wear hiking boots and have at least 2-3 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch. (Per AMC policy our hikes are intended for adults 18 years and older, and dogs are not permitted, unless indicated otherwise). Please bring Gatorade, energy gel or other electrolytes of your choice to replenish what you lose sweating.

Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as wet and slippery rocks, may cancel or modify; check website for latest updates. We meet at 10:15 at the Bear Mountain Inn. The transportation information for both public transportation leaving from Port Authority and cars (AMC Trans code: 4F on the AMC New York-North Jersey website) is indicated below. Please purchase a one way ticket since there may be rides back to the city offered, and arrive a bit early to allow time to purchase tickets (which may also be purchased in advance online), and getting to the proper gate (usually gate 408 in south wing). There is a $10 Bear Mountain State Park parking fee per vehicle for those driving.

4. 8:45 a.m. COACHUSA/Short Line. Purchase ticket at Short Line Ticket Windows in south wing or online.

F. Bear Mtn. Inn. Rockland CO., NY. Route 9W S of Bear Mtn. Bridge. Arr. 10:15.

You have an option of signing a paper liability waiver at the meeting place, but encouraged to do so online on the AMC website by clicking on link below:
