Join AMC’s Concrete to Trails Bus Trips
Discover wild places just beyond the city limits—no Uber, Lyft or train ticket required! AMC’s Concrete to Trails program offers weekly Saturday bus trips from New York City to stunning natural areas that are typically hard to reach without a vehicle. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or simply seeking fresh air and new views, these outings make it easy to escape the pavement and step into nature.

On this hike (4.75 miles, 1,200 feet elevation gain) we will begin at Anthony Wayne Recreation Area and take a route up to West Mountain passing by the viewpoint 'Cat's Elbow.' At West Mountain we will encounter the West Mountain Shelter, a Harriman State Park lean-to (one of nine!), that was previously a short 'blue blaze' (detour) off of the Appalachian Trail. The shelter overlooks the Hudson River and we will take an extended here for rest and recovery before following the (previously) Appalachian Trail back down along the natural landscape, descending back to our starting location casually and taking time to experience the conversation and our contentment. This route will be on uneven terrain of varying surfaces and we will be exposed to the elements.

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy hiking footwear
  • 2 liters of water
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
  • Bug spray
  • Trail map and compass (optional)
  • Rain gear (just in case!)

Registration Details:

  • Open to adults; registration is required for each participant.
  • Space is limited to 14 participants, so register early!
  • Please register only if you are committed to attending. If plans change, kindly cancel online to open space for others.

Meeting Info:
The group will meet the bus at 8:00 AM and depart promptly by 8:15 AM. Final meeting details (near the George Washington Bridge Bus Station) will be emailed to registered participants 2 days prior to departure.
