On this version of our hike from Sloatsburg, we spend a lot of time on the scenic HTS trail along a ridge, where we ascend the Russian Bear and Chipmunk Mountain, and are rewarded with awesome views along the way. We complete the hike on the pleasant Pine Meadow trail. Our hike ends in Sloatsburg, where we can have a post-hike snack in one of the many trendy restaurants or shops in town, and easily make the 4:25 train back to Manhattan.
This isn’t a beginner’s hike and is not suitable for slow hikers who cannot keep up or stay with the group on a hot summer day. We will hike at a steady, moderate pace, not super-fast but not slow, over a distance of 7 miles, with some steep hills (which many find challenging; hence, the vigorous rating) on hiking trails in the woods and on rocky terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 1600 feet. Hikers should wear hiking boots and have at least 2-3 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch. (Per AMC policy our hikes are intended for adults 18 years and older, and dogs are not permitted, unless indicated otherwise).
Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as wet and slippery rocks, may cancel or modify; check website for latest updates. We meet at 10:30 in Sloatsburg. The transportation information for both public transportation leaving from Penn Station and cars (AMC Trans code: 9B on the AMC New York-North Jersey website) is indicated below. Please purchase a one way ticket since there may be rides back to the city offered.
