Ramapo Ramble - Multiple Ridge & Lake Views on rarely used trails - Vigorous

This hike has it all! Multiple ridges, starting with a view of the Wanaque Reservoir, then continue to the historic Van Slyke Castle with views of Ramapo Lake and NYC for lunch. From there, we will meander the long way to the historic Cannonball Trail - which rumor has it, George Washington took the cannonballs from the foundry at Pompton Lakes north during the Revolutionary war. We will then continue to Ramapo Lake and on to a rarely used trail with views to the southeast of Ramapo Lake and then out. For car buffs, possibility of seeing a 50s Nash Metropolitan. Possibility also exists of a bear sighting (or two.)

Expect 10 miles/1,500’. This hike is 3C10- on the old AMC scale.

This hike will be at the lower end of Vigorous and is designed for those who want a longer day than a Moderate but find most Vigorous hikes too fast OR stronger hikers who want to explore a new area as well as solid vigorous hikers . For stronger hikers, you are welcome to go ahead, I assume you will either wait at the obvious regroup points or are self-sufficient on trails you probably do not know – I only worry about the hikers behind me.

If you have joined me before on my Wanaque Ridge hike and wish to join us on this hike, you should have found it easy – this hike is much longer and faster – contact Leader if not sure.

I expect hiking time of 4 ½ hours plus aesthetic time. Most likely those who came on the morning bus can catch the 4:50, but no guarantees.

Oh, yes - optional hot tub/swimming pool available – contact Leader if interested.

Covid-19 and other serious respiratory infections have been on the increase of late. In the interest of public health, do not join this hike if infected with or symptomatic of any serious respiratory illness - such as, but not exclusively, Covid-19.
