Taurus Classic Hike (Moderate)
Details
We will hike up Mount Taurus and enjoy the wonderful views from there, then descend into the valley between Breakneck Ridge and Taurus. Fine river vistas await us as we make our way back to the trailhead. From there we can head back to the town of Cold Spring or, if the group feels like it, make a quick visit to Little Stony Point.
The hike is rated moderate under the new system, and 3D8 under the old system. There will be around 1200 feet of elevation gain and 8 miles of distance covered. There may be one or two moderate rock scrambles. The first half of the hike includes a steady, lengthy climb which may be challenging, but after that the route will be on the mellow side. Please note that physical fitness and some hiking experience are required to do the whole hike.
Please bring a minimum of a quart of drinking water, a lunch and/or snacks, and whatever else you need for a day on the trail. Bug spray and sunscreen are strongly recommended. Please dress for a day in the woods and wear good hiking footwear.
We will gather at Depot Plaza in Cold Spring, which is located next to the Cold Spring Depot Restaurant, at 11:30 am. There is a Metro North train from Grand Central that leaves at 9:47 am and arrives at 11:16 am. Of course you can also take a train from Harlem-125th Street, Marble Hill, or other stations along the Hudson line. Drivers, you need to check out the parking situation yourselves. There is street parking in the town, and a parking lot near the trailhead, but it will probably fill up. From Depot Plaza we will walk to the trailhead. It will be possible to pick up a coffee and/or a muffin at the start of the hike. We plan on being out of the woods by 6:00 pm, and all are invited to join the leader for a beverage and/or bite to eat at the end of the hike. Feel free to message the leader with any questions or concerns, or post them in the chat.
