Hi all -- Yes, this is still the same book club I started eight years ago, but I'm refurbishing it a little to include a more diverse range of topics and books. It's not that I no longer feel political polarization is worth learning about and discussing, but it's well-worn ground for us by now. In honor of the semiquincentennial, I'd like to broaden our focus to any book that has an insighful or informative perspective on the American experience. That can include fiction as well as non-fiction (in fact, I'm going to start us off with a recent novel). I only ask that the book not be blatantly partisan and that it gives us food for thought abouf life in this country. October meeting: Educated
·OnlineOnlineHi all – Thanks to those who participated in last Saturday’s meeting on Mailman – we had a good conversation about Grant’s funny and poignant memoir, and about the role of postal carriers and other civil servants in U.S. society. For the next meeting, I’d going to assign another memoir that’s been on my to-read list for years: Educated by Tara Westover. The author spent her childhood isolated from mainstream society by isolationist parents and describes how education empowered her to reinvent herself and take control of her life.
