The ADHD Singles Workshop: Dating well with ADHD
Details
Why standard dating advice doesn't fit your brain, and what does.
Why does dating feel harder than it should when you have ADHD?
Partly because the standard advice was built for a different brain..
Over two hours we look at six ways ADHD tends to show up in dating.
For each one:
- what it looks like
- why your brain is doing it
- what it's good for
- and what to do about it.
Reply gaps. The uneven cadence in ADHD replies (ALL or nothing) can be confusing to potential partners. Helping potential partners understand your way of communicating is much easier than changing a lifelong pattern for you (and it works!)
The overwhelm. Apps, matches, small talk, scheduling dates can be super overwhelming (but don't need to be).
Hyperfocus. How intense new attraction gets and how to enjoy it without losing the rest of your life.
The rejection sensitivity. Dating with an ultra sensitive response to rejection (no matter how logically you might understand it) can be super tough. Learn ways to manage the RSD so the ups and downs of dating become less exhausting.
The week-six dip. Why the excitement drops (oh the pain of ADHD boredom) and how to tell settled chemistry from an actual mismatch.
Being known. Without understanding how your attention works, potential partners won't 'get' you in a way that will work long term. Communicating your own unique attentional profile, in a way that neuro-typicals can understand, is ESSENTIAL.
Who it's for: adults with ADHD, diagnosed or self-identified, single and dating or wanting to be. You won't be put on the spot.
Format: small group. Short segments with a proper break, and room to move around. Held in English.
Psychoeducational workshop, not therapy, and not a substitute for clinical treatment.
Facilitated by Kate D'Anvers, registered psychologist with 25 years experience working with couples and singles with ADHD, and Jonas Barre, communications expert. Co-founders of Amsterdam Dating School.
