In 1916, Bill, a Chicago laborer, accidentally kills his foreman and flees to the Texas Panhandle with his girlfriend, Abby, and his young sister, Linda. To avoid gossip, the lovers pretend to be siblings as they find work harvesting wheat for a wealthy, terminally ill farmer. When the farmer falls in love with Abby, Bill encourages her to marry him, hoping to inherit his fortune when he passes. However, as the farmer’s health stabilizes and genuine feelings begin to bloom, a tragic love triangle forms against the backdrop of a shifting American landscape.

Cinematographer Néstor Almendros was losing his sight during the shooting of the film, which achieved a legendary look by shooting almost entirely during the "magic hour" (the brief window of soft, golden light after sunset). Drawing inspiration from the works of Johannes Vermeer and Andrew Wyeth, the film serves as a meditation on the loss of innocence and the fleeting nature of paradise, underscored by Ennio Morricone's evocative score.
