An Italian president faces morally complex decisions, including whether to sign a euthanasia bill and whether to pardon two people convicted of killing their partners. Paolo Sorrentino drew inspiration from a real dilemma faced by former president Sergio Mattarella, crafting a reflective portrait of a leader struggling to define his legacy while confronting personal grief and doubt. With Sorrentino’s precise visual style and Toni Servillo’s nuanced performance, the film offers a contemplative examination of power, mercy, and the profound weight of choosing what “grace” truly means.

The film is in Italian, with English subtitles.
