UX Lecture: Contestability in AI - how to design for human autonomy

Details

FORMAT
This is a UX Lecture, a special series of meetups where academic research and the professional practice meet. From PhD-students to full professors, the academics present their findings and tooling with the professional field.

TALK
A concern when designing AI systems is how we can ensure that they respect human autonomy. Kars Alfrink advocates for AI-design that centres on ‘contestability’: a human can always challenge and dispute the AI's result.

During his PhD, Kars Alfrink studied metaphors we use to think about AI, such as the Black Box. When the aim is to design contestable AI, these are not very useful. Kars, therefore, developed the metaphor of the Arena, where diverse stakeholders collaboratively shape and adapt AI systems throughout their lifecycle. Tonight we talk about this metaphor and how it leads to AI systems that do respect human autonomy more.

SPEAKER
Kars Alfrink worked as a practitioner for many years for such companies as INFO. Kars has co-founded and coordinated Tech Solidarity NL, a grassroots community of tech workers in the Netherlands advancing the design and development of more just and egalitarian technology.

Currently, Kars is working on his PhD in design at Delft University of Technology. The final research paper in this PhD trajectory has just been handed in, and the date for its public defence has been set. This is, therefore, brand new research, brought to you via this UX Lecture.
