## Understanding AI for SMEs: What’s Possible and Where to Start
This is an entry level group meeting monthly, focused on helping business owners of SME's understand how AI might help them deliver growth and efficiency.
AI can feel overwhelming for many SME owners and leaders.
There is a lot of noise, a lot of tools, and a lot of people talking about big transformation. But for most SMEs, the best place to start is much simpler.
This session is designed to help business owners, founders and leaders understand what AI could practically do for their business, where the first opportunities usually sit, and how to begin adopting AI in a sensible, manageable way.
The focus will be on real business use cases, not technical jargon.
We will look at where attendees are currently with AI, what may be slowing them down, and where AI could help across areas such as sales, marketing, admin, operations, reporting and customer service.
We will also share examples of how we have helped SMEs identify practical AI opportunities, improve processes, save time, reduce admin and create more capacity within the business.
The aim is for attendees to leave with a clearer understanding of what is possible, what to avoid, and what a sensible first step into AI could look like.
## Who this session is for
This session is suitable for:
SME owners and founders
Managing Directors
Business leaders
Operations managers
Sales and marketing leads
Anyone responsible for improving efficiency, growth or internal processes
You do not need to be technical.
You just need to be open to understanding how AI could help your business work smarter.
## What attendees will get from the session
By the end of the session, attendees should have:
A clearer understanding of where they currently are with AI
A simple view of what AI can realistically help with
Examples of practical first-step AI use cases
A better understanding of where AI can save time and reduce admin
Ideas for improving sales, marketing, operations and customer service
A clearer view of what to prioritise first
A practical starting point for their own business
## What to bring
Attendees do not need to bring anything technical.
It would be useful to come prepared with:
A rough idea of where time is currently being wasted in the business
Examples of repetitive tasks or admin-heavy processes
Any areas where follow-up, reporting, customer service or sales activity feels inconsistent
A laptop or notebook if they want to take notes
An open mind and willingness to discuss where AI could help
No AI experience is required.
## Agenda
### 1. Welcome and introductions
A short introduction to the group, the purpose of the session and what we will cover.
We will keep this practical and focused on real SME challenges, not theory.
### 2. Where are you currently with AI?
We will explore where attendees are today.
This may include:
Are you already using AI?
If so, where?
What is working?
What feels confusing?
What are the barriers?
What would you like AI to help with?
The aim is to understand the current starting point before looking at solutions.
### 3. The common SME problem
Many SMEs are not short of effort. They are short of time, consistency and capacity.
We will look at common areas where AI can help, including:
Repetitive admin
Meeting notes and follow-up
CRM updates
Proposal writing
Customer enquiry handling
Sales and marketing content
Reporting
Internal handovers
Lead qualification
Process documentation
### 4. Step 1 AI use cases
We will cover practical first-step AI use cases that SMEs can adopt without needing a major transformation project.
Examples may include:
Turning meeting notes into clear actions
Drafting follow-up emails
Summarising customer conversations
Creating first-draft proposals
Producing social media content ideas
Improving lead qualification
Creating internal process guides
Building simple reporting summaries
Identifying gaps in sales or operational workflows
The focus will be on simple, useful applications that can save time quickly.
### 5. How SMEs can benefit operationally and financially
We will look at how AI can create value in a practical way.
This includes:
Saving time on repetitive tasks
Reducing admin pressure
Improving follow-up consistency
Helping teams make faster decisions
Improving customer response times
Creating more capacity without immediately adding headcount
Supporting sales and marketing activity
Reducing errors caused by manual processes
The aim is to connect AI use cases to real business benefit.
### 6. Examples from SME projects
We will share examples of how SMEs can be supported with AI adoption, including:
Identifying where AI can add value
Mapping processes before choosing tools
Finding quick wins
Improving sales and marketing workflows
Supporting CRM and pipeline visibility
Helping teams use AI safely and practically
The focus will be on what has worked, what to avoid and how to start without overcomplicating things.
### 7. Building your own AI starting point
Attendees will be encouraged to think about their own business and identify:
One process that feels too manual
One area where time is being wasted
One task that could be improved with AI
One simple first step they could take after the session
The aim is to leave with something practical, not just ideas.
### 8. Questions and discussion
Open discussion around attendee questions, concerns and ideas.
This is a chance to talk through real examples, possible use cases and where AI might fit in different types of SME.
### 9. Suggested next steps
We will finish with a simple framework for getting started:
Identify where time is being lost
Pick one practical use case
Check the process first
Test AI on a small scale
Keep humans in control
Measure the benefit
Scale what works
The goal is not to adopt AI everywhere at once.
The goal is to start in the right place.
