Manga Jam #44: Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix Vol 2 and Vol 4
Details
Note: you will need to get Volume 2 and Volume 4, we are NOT reading any additional volumes, though if you decide to read more, please go ahead but be careful about spoilers!
For this manga jam we are reading 2 stories from Osamu Tezuka's (手塚 治虫) epic Phoenix (火の鳥) saga which is a series of independent yet interlinked stories about life, death, humanity and the cosmos as represented by a constantly reborn Phoenix whose blood is said to grant immortality:
Volume 2 - Future (未来編): is set from the year 3404 to the infinite beyond, and concerns the decline of a humanity that lives in underground cities and is overly reliant on computer technology. Future is an excellent introduction to the mythology of the series.
Volume 4 - Karma (鳳凰編): is a story set in the Nara Period (specifically 750-752 AD) concerning a competition to build the Great Buddha Statue. 2 people are chosen as finalists, one an outcast who is missing an arm and atoning for horrific crimes he committed when he was younger and another a pure nobleman and Buddhist monk who wishes to reach the peak of enlightenment through his craft. Volume 4 is generally thought of as the best of the series.
