Manga Discussion: Legend of Kamui (1st Volume only)

Details

Note: We are just reading the 1st volume of this particular series.

The Legend of Kamui カムイ伝 is a samurai epic action manga with left wing political overtones from one of the most important cartoonists in the development of manga aimed at adults in Japan - Sanpei Shirato (白土 三平). Shirato co-founded and popularized the alternative magazine "Garou" during its golden era in the 1960s and his work became a mainstay of the college student protest movements of that era. Shirato's most famous work Ninja Bugeichou has yet to get an English release, this one is the first time we've seen this manga-ka in America.

Note: There is an older Viz release called "Legend of Kamui" that features art from Akame Productions - this is NOT what we are reading but a spin off series that was done in the 1980s. This release is generally hard to find but please be careful when getting your copy of this manga not to grab that version.

It's the 17th century in Japan. Child outcast Kamui lives on the fringes of a miserably stratified society. Fueled by pure grit, rage, and a dash of cunning, his only way out is to take up the mantle of ninja. Follow scrappy peasants, cold-blooded ninja, and disgraced and exalted warriors as they navigate the unforgiving hardships of a violent yet hopeful age. With its vivid and critical attention to social injustice and environmental issues against a backdrop of heart-pounding action and romance, this multilayered gekiga drama not only redefined ninja and samurai fantasy, it also offers astonishing parallels with the modern day.
