Ann Arbor AI/ML Group Meetup – September 2025
Details
Topic: Classifying Medical Transcripts by Specialty Using Fine-Tuned Language Models with Multi-Label Output
Join us for an engaging discussion on leveraging AI to classify medical transcripts by their medical specialty. This meetup will dive into three key areas:
- Use Cases: Explore how classifying medical transcripts by specialty enhances clinical workflows, improves patient care, and supports medical research.
- Fine-Tuning Language Models: Learn the process of adapting pre-trained language models to handle domain-specific tasks like medical text classification.
- Multi-Label Output Models: Understand how multi-label machine learning models enable nuanced classification, allowing transcripts to be tagged with multiple specialties when applicable.
Our speaker, Patrick Sherry, is a software engineer excited to embark on a career of natural language processing and machine learning for healthcare applications. He currently co-organizes the Ann Arbor AI/ML Meetup event and holds a master's in Computer Science from the University of Michigan. When not building models, he enjoys mountain biking, regular biking, board games, and video games.
Matters for Dialogue
AI-Powered Medical Transcript Classification: Unlocking Value
- Practical Applications: How automated classification streamlines hospital operations, aids diagnosis, and supports medical research.
- Fine-Tuning Strategies: Techniques for optimizing language models with limited medical data while avoiding overfitting.
- Multi-Label Challenges: Handling complex cases where transcripts may relate to multiple specialties.
Pizzas and sodas will be provided by Ann Arbor SPARK to keep the energy up!
Whether you’re a student, researcher, entrepreneur, or hobbyist, everyone interested in AI/ML is welcome.
