Let's make carved wood signs with the CNC Router

Join us for a beginner-friendly workshop making precision-carved wood signs on the Makerspace's Shapeoko/Makita CNC Router.

Prior experience with computers, Cricut Design Space, Ink Scape, 3D modeling or vector graphic design software is recommended but not required.

We will demonstrate the steps of creating text and importing images, putting them together into a basic carve-able design, assigning tool paths and creating the code that instructs the CNC router to carve your design into the wood.

Once ready, your design will be cut into its finished product by an authorized Makerspace CNC user. Participants will each go home with their own carved sign in a beautiful live-edge wood, ready for finishing, at the end of the class.

Makerspace PCs will be available to all participants who want direct hands-on design experience. If you have a laptop, you are encouraged to bring it with you to the class.

NOTE: This course is intended as an introduction to vector graphic design and wood carving with the CNC Router. Due to safety considerations, the CNC carving portion of the class will be either supervised (for Annapolis Makerspace members) or limited to demonstration only (for non-members) while participants' projects are cut. This course is not a substitute for the Makerspace's CNC Orientation and Safety course, which is required prior to members scheduling independent time to use the CNC Router.

Attendees will be marked 'paid' once payment is received or membership is verified. One week prior to the event if anyone is not yet paid, they will be marked as 'not going' so that waitlisted people can move into the class.
