API Design Hackathon

Details

Following a series of successful meetup events at API Craft San Francisco, we're hosting the world’s first ever hackathon focused on API Design!

This will be a half-day event that helps participants learn more about API Design and associated tools/techniques.

We also hope it will facilitate useful feedback for the API Design Toolset vendors and the subject API Provider.

Format:

We’ve chosen a “very public” REST API as our subject and we’ll split up the group into small teams, whose goal will be to improve and redesign the chosen API within a few hours and then present their results to all.

Teams will get assigned at random an API Design Toolset and will have to use it as the basis for specification, collaboration and documentation - essentially to be able to discuss designs between them and to use as a means to expose their design to the group (and the world!).

The team members can self-organize, taking the roles of architects, API consumers or product designers and will have to identify ways the API can be made better for its target audience.

Besides the Event Facilitators, we’ll have on-hand API Design Experts that teams can use as consultants, Representatives from the subject API Provider to answer any questions and Engineers from the API Design Toolsets to help with using them efficiently.

At the end of the event, we’ll ask each team to present the design and discuss their thought process (Summaries and proceedings will be published on GitHub).

We’ll also ask the teams to discuss their experience with each API design toolset and suggest ways they could be improved.

Please let us know your t-shirt size and if you have any dietary restrictions.

See you all there!
