Fall in the Pine Barrens - Batsto Lake and Mullica River - 8 - 9 miles
Details
Join us for a moderate/brisk paced hike traversing the Mullica River and along the shore of Batsto Lake in the Pine Barrens. We will hike along the mostly flat trails which are covered with packed sand and pine needles through a landscape of pine, oak, and cedar. The terrain is mostly flat, with some roots, and we will cross several wooden bridges and boardwalks. We will break for a short snack at one of the sandy beaches along the Mullica River.
Opportunity after the hike to explore historic Batsto Village, or join us for a treat at Casciano Coffee Bar in downtown Hammonton NJ. Anticipated hike time 3.5 hours
Logistics: We will meet at the Batsto Village Visitors Center. The entry to the parking lot is clearly marked as Batsto Village Historic Site. If your GPS instructs you to park before you hit the Historic Site, continue ½ mile down the road and you should see the Historic Site entrance. There are porta-johns available in the parking area, and there may be seasonal rest rooms open at the start of the hike as well. Bring along water and snacks as needed. Dress in layers that will wick moisture, plus don't forget gloves and a warm hat if the weather merits it. Steady rain cancels. Please let leader know if you have any medical conditions (allergies, etc) that could affect your ability to complete the hike. Rain, snow or ice may cancel the hike if driving conditions are questionable. If doubtful, check the status of the hike on Meetup the morning of the hike.
