- STUNNING HUDSON RIVER VIEWS ON HIKE FROM BREAKNECK TO MOPPY HILL & COLD SPRINGBreakneck ridge train station, Beacon , NY
On this vigorous hike we will view some of the most scenic spots in the Hudson Highlands on Breakneck Ridge, Little Stony Point and Mount Taurus. This is a wonderful hike for those who like great exercise, with lots of elevation gain over stone step trails and smooth dirt paths, a few by the road to reach the viewpoints, without the rock scrambles usually associated with Breakneck Ridge. After ascending the scenic new Nimham trail once, we will enjoy beautiful overlooks on other parts of the Breakneck trail, as well as Moppy Hill for our lunch spot. The Washburn trail offers amazing views of Storm King Mountain and West Point. We end up in Cold Spring where we can hike a bit further and enjoy the Market Festival by Hops on the Hudson with artists, artisans, music and food. Frequent train service is available to Manhattan after the hike.
This hike, rated as vigorous, is not suitable for beginners or slower hikers who cannot keep up or stay with the group. We will hike at a steady, brisk pace over a distance of 8 miles, with some steep hills on hiking trails in the woods and on rocky terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 1700 feet. Hikers should wear hiking boots, have at least 2 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch, and be in good condition to complete a strenuous hike (Per AMC policy our hikes are intended for adults 18 years and older, and dogs are not permitted, unless indicated otherwise). Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as wet and slippery rocks, may cancel or modify; check website for latest updates.
Train riders take the 8:50 Hudson line train from Grand Central to Breakneck Ridge, arriving at 10:19. Car drivers should park for free in the Cold Spring train station parking lot at 50 Market Street in Cold Spring and take a 5-minute train ride to Breakneck Ridge, leaving at 10:14 costing $3.25. Stay towards the rear of the train, where the Breakneck exit is typically located. All meet at the road by the Breakneck station.

Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park is a 690-acre former estate with a mansion and formal gardens located on the Connetquot River. Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a 3473-acre nature preserve with a trout hatchery.
Take tick precautions. Wear pants and a hat, tuck pants legs into socks, use bug spray, avoid walking in tall grass or brushing up against leaves, check yourself for ticks during and after the walk. Sneakers are fine for the terrain, boots are safer than sneakers and you may be happy to have boots on the sandy paths. There will be about one mile of beach walking, three miles of road walking, with the rest a mix of paved, gravel and dirt paths in the parks. Restrooms at 2.5, 9, 12 and 15 miles.
Bring water, lunch, snacks. There will be water fountains along the way but no place to get food. We will take a short lunch break at Bayard; there is a small café which is quite slow, so do not plan to buy food there as it will take too long and we will not wait.
