Do you own a compass and need to have a refresher or training on how to use it? Did you know that having a map and compass is one to the ten essentials? Using a map and compass is a skill that will keep you on track and could possibly save your life if you ever find your way lost on the trail or on the road.
Come join the AMC Worcester Chapter on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 9 am for basic map and compass training at Phelan Center at Blessed Sacrament Church 551 Pleasant St, Worcester, MA 01602. The training will go over map reading and the use of a compass to aid in navigation. The classroom training will take about two hours to complete. After the classroom training, we will be doing a moderate hike using the newly learned skills. The pace will be approximately 1.5 mph and the hike should take approximately 1.5 to 2.0 hours to complete.
This goal of this training is to get you familiar with the parts of a compass, understand the different types of compasses, how to read a topographical map, how to properly hold and use a compass, and to prepare for any type of adventure you want to take.
Training compasses and trail maps will be provided. If you own your own compass, bring it so that you can be familiar with its use. This is a key skill to use and the best way to learn is to practice on a known trail.
After this trip, please join us for the AMC150 Worcester Chapter TrailsFest 2026, taking place Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Institute Park in Worcester! TrailsFest, which has been held annually since 2018, coincides with National Trails Day and is co-hosted by a group of organizations including the Appalachian Mountain Club and Park Spirit.
At this event, we celebrate trails in all their forms, including hiking trails, bike paths, waterways, and climbing routes. Here is what the day will look like:

In 2026, the Appalachian Mountain Club is celebrating 150 years of protecting, enjoying, and understanding the outdoors! At the heart of the celebration is the AMC 150th Outdoor Relay—a connected series of outdoor adventures traveling from Virginia to Maine with a commemorative AMC flag carried along the entire route
