Description: This hike in the Watatic Mountain State Reservation area starts at the Mount Watatic Trailhead Parking Area off of Rte.119 (Rindge State Road), Asburnham, MA. We'll follow the Midstate trail to the panoramic view summit, take a detour to the south-east lookout and then head down to Nutting Ledges for our loop hike. Total distance is approximately 3.5 mile hike with a 765’ gain including a .7 mile added section which brings us to the NH state border and the Midstate/Wapack Trail junction. The bald summit elevation of 1,821' provides a panoramic view of the Boston skyline as well as Mounts Wachusett, Monadnock and North Pack, truly spectacular on a clear day. IF weather and conditions allow, we’re planning on offering an entirely OPTIONAL “challenge” hike which reverses the route from an intersection about .25 miles from the parking lot. This reverse is shortened from the original with omission of the state line trail jog and the out and back to the South Peak view. Total stats if you decide to do: 5.75 miles, 1,444’ gain. No need to make a decision ahead of time, consider it a hike day real-time decision depending upon the weather and how you (and your car pool participants if applicable) are feeling near the end of the original route.,
