Description: Gleaning, the act of collecting leftover crops from agricultural fields after a harvest has been practiced by the poors for hundreds if not thousands of years. In modern times, gleaning is more broadly used as a mean to provide fresh foods to those in need and to reduce food waste ( https://earth911.com/inspire/3-countries-food-waste-strategies-what-can-they-teach-us/ ). Come visit the Boston Area Gleaners at Stonefield Farm in Acton, learn about their history, mission and achievements and do some hands on gleaning. The Boston Area Gleaners is a regional food systems organization working at the intersection for farming, food waste, and food security. With the help of volunteers, the Gleaners harvest and pack food donated from local farms and other sources for communities across the region. In 2025 the Gleaners distributed over 5 million pounds of food corresponding to more than 20,000,000 servings of food. The Stonefield site holds an abundance of ecological habitat, rich farmland, and community resources. With the support of the Sudbury Valley Trustees, Acton Conservation Trust, and the Town of Acton Open Space Committee & Agricultural Commision, Stonefield Farm has been placed under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction to ensure that this land remains protected in perpetuity. This means: Dedicating 28 acres of high-quality land to permanent agricultural use and conserving natural resources and wildlife habitat around the farm and within the larger Heath Hen Meadow Wildlife Corridor. Please bring water to stay hydrated and a lunch/snack. After our gleaning we plan to explore a section of the Assabet River Rail Trail nearby. Come join us for an interesting and fun day.
