About us
The Arizona Mountaineering Club was founded in 1964 for the purpose of promoting and teaching safe rock climbing.
Our Mission is to provide educational opportunities, climbing experiences, advocacy to protect our climbing resources, and stewardship of the Arizona Outdoors by promoting volunteerism and community engagement.
Today the AMC has over 300 members who are involved in all aspects of rock climbing, mountaineering and various other outdoor sports. AMC members range from the occasional weekend climber to those who attempt the highest mountains around the world.
If you already have climbing skills and experience, join other members on some of our regular outings – a great way to meet new friends and discover new climbing areas.

Lead Climbing Mentorship Day
Location not specified yetThis is a practice for new lead climbers or lead climbers wanting feedback and coaching in the skill of leading.
All participants will be on the sharp end. This is NOT a top rope style event. The goal is to practice and improve lead climbing and lead belay skills.
There are 10 climber spots available (not including outing leaders) , This event is open to all current AMC club members. However you MUST have completed lead class or equivalent training (message Chris Adams if you have questions about this). Participants, who meet pre-requisites, will be selected on a first come first served basis. PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO THE GRADUATES OF WINTER 2026 LEAD CLASS.
This event is BYOG (bring your own gear) No gear will be provided by the club. Not all participants will have built a full “rack” and we’ll be sharing equipment as needed. Please expect to share gear for this event.
We’ll be climbing at the spring wall in Christopher creek which has a nice collection of moderate to hard , mostly sport routes. .

AMC Basic Outdoor Rock Climbing School - Day 1

This is DAY 1 of the 7-session AMC Basic Outdoor Rock Climbing School.

The full class spans two weeks with four weeknight sessions (three in-person and one online) plus three full weekend days out on the rock at various crags. You will learn fundamental top-rope climbing skills including: equipment selection and usage, rope handling, climbing knots, climbing calls and partner communication, belaying, rappelling, climbing techniques, and basic self-rescue.
On Day 1, we will meet in person at the North Mountain Visitor Center to get oriented, distribute gear, and begin learning some climbing fundamentals, including gear and knots.
Who is it for?
This course is for anyone who wants to learn to climb safely outdoors using current best practices in rock climbing. Whether you've never climbed at all, or want to transition from the gym to real rock, or if you’ve climbed with friends but want to fill those learning gaps, this class is for you. It is also a prerequisite for other AMC classes, including Anchors, Lead, and Canyoneering.What do I need?
All required gear is provided by the club, including a comprehensive reference manual. Every student gets a gear pack that includes: five carabiners (one parabiner, two lockers, and two non-lockers), a belay/rappel device, three prusiks, a sewn sling, and webbing, all of which are yours to keep. We provide helmets and harnesses as needed, and may have shoes for rent depending on availability. However, if you have your own climbing harness, helmet, and/or shoes, please bring them.About AMC:

The full class spans two weeks with four weeknight sessions and three full weekend days out on the rock at various crags. On Day 2, we will be discussing climbing history, and ethics, as well as climbing calls and communication. We will also present basic techniques for belaying and rappelling, in preparation for the weekend practice sessions. This session will be conducted on-line via Zoom. The link will be sent to registered participants.

Let's go climbing! On Day 3, we'll spend the entire day out on the rock gaining practical experience with rock climbing techniques and belaying. In addition to climbing, we'll learn more about being good stewards of public lands and climbing areas.
Location is TBD depending on weather and other factors.
What do I need to bring?
You will need climbing gear including: harness, helmet, climbing shoes, personal anchor, several carabiners (locking and non-locking), belay/rappel device, webbing, and your prusik cords. Also bring: water, food, and layers to stay hydrated, fed, and comfortable all day, as well as a pack big enough to carry everything.About AMC:
