Join us on Monday, March 3rd at 7pm at Meraki Kava Bar to have our first speaker of the series, Jennifer Murphey. She spoke last year discussing her lawsuit against the United States. She will now update us on the details of the case and how you can help support her endeavors.

Jennifer N. Murphey is an attorney based in Oro Valley, Arizona, who has initiated a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of various federal and state drug control laws. Representing herself, she filed the case against the United States, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, DEA Administrator Anne Milgram, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. The lawsuit seeks declaratory and injunctive relief, alleging that the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), the Arizona Controlled Substances Act (AZCSA), and international drug control treaties infringe upon her constitutional rights.

Case Background:

Murphey asserts that she personally cultivates, possesses, and uses substances such as psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, iboga, marijuana, and coca leaves within her home for personal healing and spiritual growth. She contends that the prohibition of these activities under the CSA, AZCSA, and related treaties violates her rights to personal and mental autonomy, free speech, and due process as protected by the U.S. Constitution.

Her case has been taken up the chain of courts through the appeal process and her next hearing is on April 1st. She will talk about the process and how this case could bring real change to the legal status of psychedelic substances if things go well.
