What we're about

Welcome to Sydney Sketch Club!! A group of very friendly people of varying levels of art expertise will provide encouragement, motivation and inspiration for sketching in public. Meetups are held on average 2-3 times a month at all sorts of locations across Sydney. Occasionally we will have day trips by car or train (to Windsor , Glenbrook, Leura, Mittagong, Camden and Bowral so far).

We regularly have between 20-30 people attend the activities.

We usually meet for 2.5 – 3 hours (often drawing in small groups) and then gather for a show’n’tell and group book photo. The social side of the Club comes from the members who stick around to have lunch together. This is when you can chat with your fellow sketchers and discuss techniques and materials used – sketchbooks are often shared around.

Members can upload their sketches to the SSC meetup site which is a great way to share work. It is highly recommended that you take time to look at the Photo Albums on the SSC meetup site of previous activities - you will find such inspiration there.

You will need to supply all your own art supplies. There is no formal tuition given but you can certainly "learn from others".

There is an activity charge of $1 only, which is used to help defray the monthly costs charged by meetup.com to have Sydney Sketch Club included on their site. Excess funds are often used for lucky-draw prizes at say the Christmas sketch meet / prizes for Everyday-in-May challenge etc etc.

So please get up the courage to attend your first meetup - I am sure you will be hooked as I was when I discovered SSC - we have a great group of regulars who attend as often as their lives/commitments permit so you are likely to make some nice friends along the way to share your art interest with.

WHERE TO FIND US Meet at the ‘bandstand’ in Belmore Park, between Hay Street and Eddy Avenue opposite Central Railway Station (pictured). WHAT IS THERE TO DRAW There are many varieties of trees in this small area. For members who have no interest in flora+fauna the Railway Station Clocktower opposite might appeal? LUNCH The IN Cafe opposite the Park at 11-23 Rawson Pl, Haymarket (ground floor of the YHA) has some $15 lunch specials : https://incaferestaurant.com.au/menu/#anchor2 Jennifer’s contact if required on the day[masked] ............................ LIVING HERITAGE FESTIVAL AT TEMPE HOUSE

Tempe House

In addition to doing a painting or sketch of the main house (circa ) today there is a heritage festival which will include demos inside St Magdelen’s Chapel including lacemaking, quilling (paper craft) and decorative plasterwork. There will be free antique valuations, if you thought Grandma’s old ceramic was worth a fortune just like TV? Market stalls, artisan food and craft beer, performances and an exhibition of rare colonial fashion gowns including one child’s gown from the 1830s. More information: https://www.hha.net.au/lhfstallsdemos WHERE TO FIND US Tempe House is at 1 Princes Highway, Arncliffe. Meet on the grass bank between the main House and the Cooks River. COST There will be no dollar charge today. But if you would like to see inside the house or check out the demos inside the Chapel a ticket can be purchased on the day ($10). TRANSPORT Train to Wolli Creek. 422, 314, 372, 520 are the bus options if you live on one of those routes. If driving, there seems to be very little parking in the few residential streets near the station and I suspect there will be many visitors for the Festival. Who knows whether across the road in Gertrude Street might be more accessible? LUNCH If the local cafes are not open for the crowds, we will take the 10 min walk across Cahill Park to the Rowers Club on Cooks River. SKETCH CLUB WEEKEND AWAY - SOUTH COAST (KIAMA)

Kiama Blowhole

After the success of our first weekend away, when there were 36 of us enjoying all that was on offer in the Cowra region, I am pleased to say that plans are underway for our next sketch club weekend away – this time 4 days (3 nights) on the ‘south coast’ based at KIAMA. Those that are able to get time off work will leave Sydney on THURSDAY 12 SEPTEMBER and we will return home on SUNDAY 15 SEPTEMBER. As Kiama is less than 2 hours drive from Sydney there is more opportunity for members who just want to come down for the “weekend” if they work fulltime but have no holidays accrued? Please be reminded that this being a tourist area [even though luckily we will be out of school holidays] it will be important that as soon as you decide you want to go/have arranged time off work etc that you secure your accommodation – see below for possible .o My thoughts for outings/sketching/photography include the below and I have uploaded various photos to give you an idea of the landscape, buildings etc. A formal itinerary with more details would be distributed closer to the time to confirmed attendees. THURSDAY • To Kiama along the ‘coast road’/sea cliff bridge stopping at Austinmer which has a couple of sweet shops and The Butterfly House which I saw on an American Amazing Houses-type TV show – google image and maps shows that we can see it from the beach where there are two simple rock pools? • One of our Wollongong sketch friends highly recommends we visit Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul (called King’s Theatre when it was built in 1925 and sold in 2013 for $1.4 million) –the website shows lots of semi-famous performers still doing shows so I sent an email trying to find out if we could get a private tour but no response – the foyer architecture looks amazing so it is a pity if we cannot see it in real life; we will have to be content with a sketch of the exterior. • We will continue past Port Kembla (unsure if we could do a quick sketch of the Steelworks from the car park?) then on to Windang Island – depending on the tide it would be great if we could sketch the remains of train wheels/axle sets and other rusted items from a cancelled industrial railway line (again, see photo uploaded). FRIDAY • If you were prepared to set the alarm it could be spectacular to see the sun rise at Bombo Rocks (less than 10 minutes drive?) – there are many google images of this region – we will spend the morning sketching some amazing formations at Cathedral Rocks / “Boneyard Beach” • In the afternoon it has been suggested we do a formal ‘sketch crawl’ in Kiama – perhaps challenging ourselves with a set time at each of the fish market/marina area, lighthouse and the famous Blowhole SATURDAY • Sketching and lunch at Berry Historic Village (20 minutes drive) – see photos of the Museum (1884), Court House (Greek Revival architecture completed in 1891 at a final cost of £1658), couple of sketchable shops and you might find some quaint cottages in the adjacent streets to the main Village cafe strip? • Further Kiama sketching if we get back in time – possibly the “pink” Post Office ? SUNDAY • After checking out, spend the morning sketching at Jamberoo (less than 15 minutes drive) which has a lookout with great views of the landscape, lunch in the Tudor style pub circa 1857, then another 15-20 minutes drive to Budderoo National Park / Minnamurra Falls (see photos uploaded) with perhaps an afternoon snack at the Lyrebird Cafe then approximate driving time via freeway to Sydney is 1 hour 45 RSVP Yes if I have whetted your appetite. Once you have secured accommodation please send me an message through the meetup profile by clicking on my name/photo – I will need your personal email address for future correspondence (I cannot attach documents within meetup), your mobile number and car make+rego in case of emergency. Regards Jennifer
