Metropolitan Opera: Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)"
Details
Join us for the Met Opera's live-streamed production of "The Barber of Seville," Rossini's comedic masterpiece about two young lovers and their quest to be together. It centers around Count Almaviva's love for Rosina, a young woman under the guardianship of Dr. Bartolo, who plans to marry her himself for her dowry. With the help of the clever barber Figaro, Almaviva, disguised as various characters, orchestrates a series of comedic events to win Rosina's affection and ultimately marry her.
Sung in Italian with English subtitiles, it's part of the Met's award-winning "Live in HD" series and includes an intermission.
It stars mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina as Rosina, the feisty heroine; tenor Jack Swanson as her secret beloved Count Almaviva; baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky as Figaro, the titular barber of Seville; bass-baritone Peter Kálmán as Dr. Bartolo; and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Don Basilio. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts this live performance.
"The Barber of Seville" is generally considered an excellent opera for beginners. Its story is funny and easy to follow, and the music is both recognizable and enjoyable.
Tickets are $24 for under age 65 and $22 for seniors. They're available at the box office now or on the day of the show.
For a very different form of opera buffa from a well-known character in 1937, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kBcbrXztp0. It's less than 2 minutes long.
