Let's Expand Our Knowledge of Art!
Details
This presentation explores how art and science both expand human understanding, particularly when their insights intersect. Drawing on ideas from Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light by Leonard Shlain (1991), the talk examines moments when artistic movements and scientific discoveries reveal parallel shifts in how we perceive reality. Case studies include Impressionism and emerging science of light and perception, Cubism and changing ideas about observation in modern physics, fractal geometry and the Mandelbrot set, the role of anatomical drawing in scientific investigation, and modern climate data visualization. The session concludes by identifying recurring patterns in how artistic intuition and scientific inquiry reinforce one another, and how individuals and communities can become more attentive to these connections in everyday life. It will also briefly introduce a set of discussion guides designed to explore art–science questions in community settings, available at https://seekerpnw.org and the Art & Science section https://seekerpnw.org/art-science.
We meet virtually every month on Zoom on the second Saturday at noon and would love to have you join us!
DESCRIPTION
We have a very active membership and each month one of our members volunteers to give a "presentation" that invites us to learn about some area of the art world that piques their interest. Often folks tell us about the artist, the history of the piece, techniques utilized or the school or time period of the artist or type of art. They share their screen and then we all can see and comment on what we are learning. I like to think of it as an online "art salon".
