## 🎨 FEATURED EXHIBITION #1 Old Masters and New Amsterdam
Step back into the world of 17th-century New Amsterdam, where early New York first began to take shape.
This beautiful exhibition explores the connection between:
- Dutch Golden Age painting
- Early colonial New York
- Trade, culture, immigration, and daily life in the young city
Featuring remarkable European works alongside historical objects, this exhibition offers a rare chance to experience the artistic and cultural atmosphere that helped shape New York itself.
Accompanying the exhibition is a digital reimagining of the 1660 Castello Plan of New Amsterdam. Created in partnership with the New Amsterdam History Center, this interactive map lets visitors explore sites in the 17th century city, including a house where enslaved Africans lived, the original City Hall, and the Indian Trading House. Curated by Russell Shorto, Director of the New Amsterdam Project at The New York Historical, and Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., Senior Advisor to The Leiden Collection. Exactly 400 years ago the Dutch founded the city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. In Europe at that same time they were revolutionizing art, with Rembrandt and his contemporaries turning a keen eye to the world around them. This first-of-its-kind exhibition uses their paintings to help us envision life in the little Dutch settlement that would become New York. With works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, and Jan Steen, many of them never before shown in New York, the exhibition will dazzle and delight viewers. ## 👠 FEATURED EXHIBITION #2 The Weitzman Shoe Museum
From elegance and craftsmanship to fashion and identity, The Weitzman Shoe Museum explores the fascinating history of footwear and design.
This exhibition highlights:
- Historic and designer shoes
- Fashion innovation
- Cultural trends through the decades
- The artistry and storytelling behind iconic footwear
A truly unique and visually engaging experience.
Everyone on the planet—with few exceptions—wears something on their feet to protect them from the earth. Yet the humble shoe also can be an object of desire, display, and deliberation, transcending its utilitarian purpose. Shoes can be sculptural, serve as historic artifacts, or call up abstract considerations—such as the freighted meanings of femininity, power, domination, and aspiration—for both women and men alike.
Renowned shoe designer Stuart Weitzman and businesswoman and philanthropist Jane Gershon Weitzman have assembled a stunning collection of footwear—from historical examples of workaday shoes to Stuart Weitzman's own creations to the many "fantasy shoes" that Jane Gershon Weitzman commissioned from artists to display in her husband's store windows. This extraordinary donation finds a home in our soaring new Weitzman Shoe Museum. Taken together, these objects encompass not only a history of fashion but also a history of consumption, celebrity, and the ebb and flow of American industry.
