HISTORY

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world's largest and finest art museums. Its collection spans 5,000 years of world culture, from prehistory to the present and from every part of the globe. Founded in 1870, the Metropolitan Museum is located in New York City's Central Park along Fifth Avenue (from 80th to 84th Streets). Last year it was visited by 4.7 million people.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO VISIT....................

# European Paintings from 1300–1800

Our Member Group will be visiting the gallery dedicated to European Paintings from 1300 to 1800 highlight fresh narratives and dialogues among more than 700 works of art from the Museum’s world-famous holdings. The newly reconfigured galleries—which include recently acquired paintings and prestigious loans, as well as select sculptures and decorative art—will showcase the interconnectedness of cultures, materials, and moments across The Met collection.

The chronologically arranged galleries will feature longstanding strengths of the collection—such as masterpieces by Jan van Eyck, Caravaggio, and Poussin; the most extensive collection of 17th-century Dutch art in the western hemisphere; and the finest holdings of El Greco and Goya outside Spain—while also giving renewed attention to women artists, exploring Europe’s complex relationships with New Spain and the Viceroyalty of Peru, and looking more deeply into histories of class, gender, race, and religion.

The reopening of the suite of 45 galleries at the top of the Great Hall staircase follows a five-year project to replace the skylights. This monumental infrastructure project improves the quality of light and enhances the viewing experience for a new look at this renowned collection.

Let's all go to the Museum of the City of New York! The cost for tickets online is $20, however, they do have Pay-What-You-Wish-Admission available at the ticket counters. I will leave what to pay to each Member. The Museum of the City of New York celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. Founded in 1923 as a private, nonprofit corporation, the Museum connects the past, present, and future of New York City. They have several exhibitions on right now.

As group members of the New York City Art, Film, Museum, Social Club, we are going to visit the following exhibitions at the Museum in the following order:

## 1. Art Deco City & You Are Here - 3rd Floor

Art Deco City: New York Postcards from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection illuminates the key role postcards played in transforming New York into an international capital during the interwar years. Featuring over 250 postcards as well as decorative arts, fashion, photography, drawings, and architectural models, Art Deco City will immerse visitors in the dazzling style that defined the modern city.

“You Are Here” draws on the rich archive of movies set in New York, combining thousands of cinematic moments across 16 screens.

## 2. Activist New York - 2nd Floor

Delve into the drama of social activism in New York City, past and present, with issues as diverse as immigration, civil rights, and sexual orientation.

## 3. New York At Its Core - 1st Floor

What made New York New York? Follow the story of the city’s rise from a striving Dutch village to today’s “Capital of the World,” and consider its future in our changing world.

## 4. Timescapes - Ground Floor

Watch the history of New York City unfold in this 28-minute film. Depending on time, I want to go to the 3:00pm or 3:40pm showing of this film.

HISTORY

The New-York Historical Society is renowned for its large-scale historical exhibitions. These exhibitions cover a wide range of subjects, including the founding father of the United States Alexander Hamilton, New York abolitionist, the Hudson River School, Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, Louis Comfort Tiffany's stained glass, and the September 11 attacks.
The museum of the New-York Historical Society houses over 1.6 million historical objects and works of art. These collections document the history of the United States and New York, and include paintings from the Hudson River School, watercolors by Jean-Jacques Audubon, decorative arts, and objects related to the September 11, 2001 attacks.

There is a cost to visit the museum. Adults are $24. Seniors, Educators, Active Military are $19. Students are $13. If you have a Culture Pass, there is no cost for admission.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO VISIT? There are many exhibitions that are worth seeing at the museum, including the Objets d'Art of André Chervin, and especially the Gallery of Tiffany Lamps, however, our visit will focus on two wonderful exhibitions as follows:

# Real Clothes, Real Lives: 200 Years of What Women Wore, the Smith College Historic Clothing Collection.

This groundbreaking exhibition examines the everyday clothing of ordinary women, from hard-worn house dresses to psychedelic micro minis and modern suits to fast-food workers’ uniforms. On view in the Joyce B. Cowin Gallery of Women’s History and showcasing items from the Smith College Historic Clothing Collection that are on view in a museum for the first time, this exhibition traces how women’s roles have changed and evolved dramatically over the decades across the spectrum of race and class. Each piece of clothing holds rich stories about the woman who wore it and who made it, the materials used, and the context in place and time.

# From Paul Revere to Edward Hopper: Treasures from the Leonard L. Milberg Collection of American Prints, Drawings, and Watercolors

From Paul Revere to Edward Hopper presents an exhibition of more than 140 prints, drawings, and watercolors from one of the most admired collections of historical American works on paper. Bringing to vivid life two and a half centuries of the American experience, the exhibition features a rich tapestry of artworks, including early 18th-century portraits of Indigenous leaders, picturesque views of towns and cities, inspiring landscapes, dramatic images of historic events, and popular prints. Among these rare and iconic works are exceptional holdings of the American Pre-Raphaelites and a vibrant selection of prints, watercolors, and pastels by the artists of the Eight and the Ashcan School, such as John Sloan and George Bellows.
