A collaborative group for zinesters, artists, and creatives to get together an pillage the library's old magazines and recycle books for collage materials. If you find you really enjoy this art form, there are two Zine fair events in Salt Lake every year that you can enter as an artist or attend as a collector. The event photo is of my own zine collection. A few, half-finished, were created by me but most I collected at last year's zine event.
Zines are small (4x5") to mini (2x2") "self-publications" or "magazines" that can be anything from a visual list (e.g. favorite movie) to a story to a mini sketchbook. There is actually a long history and community around zines.
Sketch Artists: Use the supplied materials (or anything in the library) to practice your sketching. Maybe create a zine of similarly themed sketches. Or collaborate with a writer to tell their story. Or practice your portraiture skills live by sketching your fellow attendees.
Journaling: Collage, sketch, and write your heart onto these little unintimidating pages. Anything angering you in the news these days? Get it out of your head and onto a page. Or create a theme "book" of happy thoughts. Leave some pages blank to fill in the following week, no pressure.
Aspiring Writers: Defeat the dreaded blank page by folding it down to size. Write out a story idea in 8 mini pages or work on some dialogue.
Comic Strip: Write out an amusing scenario and add collage photos or sketch your characters.
If you need inspiration, or are just curious, the library has a zine collection you can browse and even check out and take home.
