If you’re a progressive atheist and want to enjoy the company of other free-thinkers, you are warmly invited to have lunch with us. We’ll talk about whatever interests us, make new friends and make sense together using rational discourse and wisdom garnered from our lives. Our purpose is social, our philosophy is skeptical humanist, and our politics are progressive. What is a Humanist? Read it here: https://americanhumanist.org/what-is-humanism/humanism-capital-h/ We support the Humanist Manifesto III. Read it here: https://americanhumanist.org/what-is-humanism/manifesto3/
Humanism - Informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by compassion. Natural answers to natural questions
We meet twice a month at 11:30 am on the first and third Thursdays, usually in Burbank.
**** But during Covid-19 social distancing, we are meeting every Thursday on Zoom. Link is provided at end of description.
You can test the Zoom link before the meeting if you like. Let me know if you have any problems. (message through Meetup)
TOPICs : It's nice to have a topic or two to discuss as a starting point. Although segues and general conversation are good too! This is a social conversation. Please write your suggestions in the comments. If we don't get to it this time, I'll collect them for later.
====================== STARTING TOPICS for 11/19 =================
- 1 minute introductions and rants -
----- How long have you been an atheist/agnostic/humanist/any other classification you give yourself?
----- You can rant about anything. Just do it! You'll feel better. - No meeting next week unless someone wants to lead it?
- A philosophical question for you - Do acts of kindness always have a motive behind them?
- America's urban-rural partisan gap is widening. Why is this? Is there anyway past it? Do you have relatives in rural areas and are their views different than yours?
- What movies have you been watching? Do you have an all-time favorite film?
- How are you going to determine whether to take a Covid vaccine or not? Should it be mandatory?
- Farming on Mars will be a lot harder than ‘The Martian’ made it seem -- https://www.sciencenews.org/article/mars-farming-harder-martian-regolith-soil. Did you ever have a desire to go to another planet?
- Any others you have.
