- Help Audit Nonprofit Websites for AccessibilityLink visible for attendees
Hello Accessibility Atlanta Team. We have another great opportunity to provide accessibility auditing and coaching at the 48in48 Social Justice Build Event which empowers BIPOC and social justice nonprofits through technology and marketing. Hundreds of developers, designers, and digital content specialists will come together and spend 48 hours building 48 websites for 48 deserving nonprofits. (That's an impressive goal – and we need you to help make it a reality.)
This is a hybrid event, so please feel free to join us in person (location details TBD) or from the comfort of your home or favorite coffee shop.
Here's the role we'll play: During the hours of 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Saturday, and again from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, we'll provide accessibility reviews and remediation recommendations to the project/design teams as they complete their website builds. A special Slack channel will be set up for us (#A11Y) through which we'll schedule review sessions and host office hours to provide accessibility coaching.
To keep things simple, we will focus our reviews on a minimal number of WCAG 2.0 guideline items. This will keep things understandable and actionable for project teams that may have limited (or zero) exposure to accessibility compliance before the event. It's a fantastic way to introduce people to the topic and to positively affect websites designed to support communities in need.
Please join us for this fun and impactful weekend. We need at least 20 volunteers to pull this off.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
(1) The accessibility audit team is open to everyone (not just specialists and experts). We'll provide basic training (date TBD). This is an excellent opportunity to learn as well as serve.
(2) No one is expected to be on call for the entire event. Any amount of time you can volunteer is appreciated. For example, I'll be on call to perform audits from 12-3 PM and again from 6-8 PM on Saturday. You may choose a single hour or a more extended block. it's your call.
(3) Please register for the event via the 48in48 website so we can properly plan. (feel free to RSVP her too). Just follow the link above and select "COACH" when asked to pick a skill.
(4) If you're interested in joining a sub-committee to help us prepare simple training materials for the event build teams, please respond in the post comments below, and we'll include you in the proper side channels.
(5) A pregame meeting (orientation and planning) has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 18th, 5:30-6:15 PM (ET). Please join us for a full walkthrough of the event details and some quick basic training.
