• Shady Dale Rodeo Shoot

    Needs a location

    About the Rodeo

This is the 39th year of the Shady Dale Rodeo and festival, with rodeo events at 8:00 p.m., June 2 and 3, 2023. This sanctioned, professional rodeo features traditional competitive events such as bull, bareback and saddle bronc riding, calf roping and steer wrestling and barrel racing. It is sponsored by local and regional Masonic and Shriner organizations, with proceeds benefiting their charities.

    The Shoot

The last time a group from Atlanta Photographic Society attended was in 2017. At night under lights, photography can be a bit challenging, but nothing that high/auto-ISO settings on modern cameras and phones can’t handle. Also, it might be a bit cooler at night, but if you arrive during the afternoon, a straw western or other sun hat and sunscreen would be a good idea.

Last time (and hopefully again this year) we were able to move freely outside the rodeo fence to select optimum views and photograph “behind the scenes.” Photos from your stadium seats are also possible. A telephoto lens of at least 300mm or equivalent is recommended. The 2017 APS shooting field trip was lots of fun and resulted in many good action photographs.

    Tickets & Parking

Adult tickets are $20.00 and may be ordered on the Shady Dale Rodeo website or purchased at the event. The website offers limited free express parking spaces for “early ticket purchasers” and a warning that these special parking spaces will go quickly. Another option to avoid lengthy lines for parking is to arrive early (before 6pm) and eat supper in the arena. Pit cooked bar-b-q and fresh baked goods are being offered for sale, along with soft drinks and that classic southern treat of boiled peanuts (maybe an acquired taste, you think?).

    Location

The town of Shady Dale is about 50 miles from Atlanta, about 20 miles south of I-20, on GA Highways 142 and 83. Take I-20 exit 105, Newborn Road, (near Social Circle and Rutledge), drive south, then GA 142 east from Newborn to Shady Dale. The rodeo arena is a short distance south on Railroad Drive.

    How to Participate

We urge APS members and guests to attend on Saturday, June 3rd. There is an in-town festival that day at the town park under the water tower, with many memorabilia vendors and a parade at 3:00 if you want to make a full day of it.

To participate in this APS shoot, please notify Don Stephens by email. Please include your cell-phone number and email, how many people and whether you would like to car pool as a driver or passenger. The cell-phone number will allow us to find each other and get together at the event. If you want one of the express parking spaces, order your tickets early, on-line at the Shady Dale Rodeo website.

    https://www.shadydalerodeo.com/

Please get your tickets RIGHT AWAY! Otherwise, plan to arrive at least a couple of hours before the rodeo starts.

    See you there. Yeehaw!
