Atlanta CyberSecurity (ACS) hosts monthly events featuring presentations, hackathons, technical workshops, panel discussions, and networking. ACS is the Atlanta chapter of CyberSecurity Non-Profit (csnp.org), an organization dedicated to promoting security education and awareness. Our goal is to make cybersecurity more accessible by building a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive community in Atlanta. All skill levels welcome.

Abstract:
In this 6th of the CISO series, you'll explore the details on what daily cybersecurity looks like for a business.

Speaker Bio:

Chris Zell is the vice president and head of information security for The Wendy’s Company. In this role, he is responsible for establishing, operating, and maintaining a security program covering over 6700 company and franchisee-owned digital and e-commerce platforms, ensuring the protection of Wendy’s information assets and customer data. Zell is a member of several Wendy’s leadership committees and councils and serves as the Chair for the Wendy’s Military Support Network.

Prior to Wendy’s, Zell worked for Lowe’s Home Improvement in several security leadership roles managing Lowe’s cyber security operations, risk management, information security teams and programs, compliance, and threat and vulnerability management. Prior to Lowe’s, he worked for several large Department of Defense contractors supporting military intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, the military healthcare system, and served as lead for cyber policy and research for U.S. Air Forces Central Command, supporting Air Force interests in Southwest Asia. Zell is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he spent his career building, securing, and protecting DoD networks from the most advanced threat actors in the world

Zell is a founding board member of a local chapter of an international non-profit (ICMCP), an advisory board member for the State of Ohio “CyberOhio” initiative, and on the board of directors for the Retail and Hospitality Information Sharing and Analysis Center (RH-ISAC). He received his Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Western Governor’s University and has attained over a dozen industry certifications, including the Certified Ethical Hacker, SANS Security Leadership Certification, and the CISSP. Zell is working on his Master of Science degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, graduation expected in 2020.

[Bios]

Courtney Hans is a Code Fellows Cybersecurity Engineering alum and has her MBA (Marketing & General Management) from UC Davis. She recently transitioned from a career as a strategic business development leader (in the wine, travel, and outdoor recreation industries) into the cybersecurity field, and is currently in her first security role focusing on government, risk, and compliance. She is passionate about educating people around security, as humans are typically the weakest link leading to major cybersecurity incidents. Courtney also enjoys making silly analogies out of complex topics to connect with her audience.

David is a cybersecurity instructor based in Seattle. The principal curriculum developer of the first ever Code Fellows cyber ops bootcamp, David holds a masters degree in Cybersecurity & Information Assurance and has completed a number of certifications including AWS Certified Security - Specialty and Splunk Core User. When not teaching, David volunteers for Cybersecurity Non-Profit (CSNP) in an effort to provide career resources and create pathways for aspiring cyber professionals of tomorrow. Aggregating system logs using a SIEM is only your first step; to derive value from such a system, you'll need to traverse the oceans of data to find the logs you need. This presentation is all about log analysis, and we'll demonstrate how log data can be visualized then searched against.

Malware Detection with YARA Rules

Customizing your organization's defenses according to its situation and needs is critical, and thankfully we have a wealth of community resources available for malware detection in particular. This presentation introduces YARA rules, and how one can use them in a malware scanning solution such as ClamAV to facilitate the in-house development of customized malware detection.
