The key to successful opening play is balance.

Hitting and making points are two major goals.
Be flexible. Don't stack up your checkers just to play safe.
Hit your opponent if they split to your 4, 5 or bar point.
Don't strip your mid-point.
Prime two checkers, attack one checker.
