What we’re about
This group is for people who enjoy discussing interesting topics such as culture, history, philosophy, science, and religion. It is for those who are willing to question their own ideas and open to new and differing ideas.
As host, I will occasionally use Socratic irony; posing provocative questions to challenge your thinking and take you out of your comfort zone. If you are easily offended or overly sensitive, this might not be the forum for you.
Some meetings will be face-to-face on the North Shore of Auckland, while others will be online.
The in-person meetings are likely to be monthly on the North Shore of Auckland (probably near Smales Farm), at times to suit potential attendees (possibly Monday evening or weekend lunchtime).
The online meetings will use Microsoft Teams, which will work in a browser but will works better using the app, which you can download from:

Rock The Vote NZ presents Ian Handricks on “The AI Uprising: What Every Kiwi Needs to Know”
Ian Handricks will be speaking about Artificial Intelligence (AI) - no longer the realm of science fiction, but the silent engine already reshaping our economy, employment, media, healthcare, and democracy.Ian will present an overview of AI’s past, present, and rapidly unfolding future, beginning with a brief history - from Alan Turing’s theoretical groundwork to the explosive rise of ChatGPT and autonomous systems - and explore how AI has transitioned from lab curiosity to global disruptor. Ian will help demystify key terms like “machine learning”, “neural networks” and “generative AI”, so that attendees will understand the forces behind this technological shift.
The talk will then examine AI’s accelerating impact on New Zealand society. From the automation of jobs in agriculture, transport, and customer service, to the ethical concerns surrounding surveillance, misinformation, and algorithmic bias, Ian will unpack both the promises and perils of AI, and its implications for our everyday lives.
Ian Handricks is an educator, entrepreneur, and AI consultant, who has over 50 years’ experience in business, technology, and public speaking. He co-leads Brain Solutionz, a consultancy helping organisations implement AI effectively and ethically. There will be time for Q&A’s and discussion after Ian’s talk.Tickets $15 until 10pm Saturday 28 June on Eventfinda
