Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid is a famous 1979 book by cognitive and computer scientist Douglas Hofstadter. It’s about a deceptively simple question:

How can minds, meaning, and consciousness emerge from simple, rule-following systems?

Put it more simply, how intelligence came to existence?

This book might look intimidating at the first sight. To be honest, I skipped all the hard parts and only read the comic story parts. You can find where all the comic stories are in the index. Apparently the writer is begging you to read them and there’s a good reason behind it.

This is what we do

1. We’ll meet at the fountain area in Albert Park. I’ll be sitting on one of the benches there, holding the book.
2. We read GEB for 20 mins near the fountain.
3. We walk around the park in small groups and have some conversations using GEB as a conversation starting point.

This event happens during lunchtime, feel free to bring your lunch.

I expect to host this event every week. If the weather is not good I will cancel it.

• Play mini drawing games
• Share tips and thoughts on making comics
• Finish at least one page of comic sketch

📍We’re on the top floor (2nd floor, the same floor as the Research Library) of Central City Library, in the open study area next to the escalator.
