Devonport explore: North Head & Mt Victoria
Details
We hope you had a wonderful Xmas and are ready to kick-start your 2026 with some awesome outdoor adventures. This hike is great if you are new to hiking, perhaps you have let your fitness slide a bit over the holidays, or a regular who wants to explore an area you may not have been to before.
We will explore the tunnels around North Head then head over to Mt Victoria via a couple of reserves. Even if you have lived in NZ all your life you may find some new places you didn't know about! We will return via the waterfront pathway.
Approx. 7km
Approx walking time. 2hrs
Please arrive before 10.00am so we are ready to start hiking at 10.00am.
Difficulty: 2 out of 5
Led by Helen KF. (021 0282 3600) and Mike F. (027 431 9054)
Meeting point will be the main gate into North Head. GPS is Google Maps. Please park in the surrounding roads NOT actually in North Head. Suggest parking in Takarunga Road or Cheltenham Road.
Guests welcome at this event.
Donation - Due to increased Meetup subscription costs we ask all members to contribute $2 for this hike. You can either bring a gold coin on the day or make the donation direct to our dedicated bank account:

Any donation money remaining after our 6 monthly subscription is paid will go towards safety gear for the group.
If you can no longer attend the hike please make sure you update your RSVP immediately so others can have the chance to join. If you decline within 24hrs of the start time or don't turn up this will be treated as a 'no show'. 3 no shows will mean you will be removed from the group for 6 months.
Limited to 40 people.
Bring - A hat, sunscreen and rain coat are useful as the weather can change fast. NO JEANS.
Food - Bring your own lunch, snacks, and enough water (min 2l) etc
Suggest carpooling. Please comment when you rsvp whether you need a lift / can offer lifts, which part of Auckland and your mobile number. It’s up to you to arrange this among yourselves. Please bring $10 cash for your driver if you are getting a lift or make arrangements to send them a direct bank transfer. You could even catch the ferry or a bus if you prefer to use public transport.
Option at the end of the hike to have lunch at The Torpedo Bay Cafe (or bring your lunch and buy an ice-cream or cake)
[Torpedo Bay Café — National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy (navymuseum.co.nz)](https://navymuseum.co.nz/visit/torpedo-bay-cafe/).
Option also to swim at the beach, if so bring togs and towel.
We look forward to seeing you.
Helen and Mike
