For our next Video Game Book Club meeting, we’ll be discussing Celeste, a critically acclaimed platformer that blends precise, challenging gameplay with a deeply personal story about identity, anxiety, and self-acceptance.
In Celeste, players guide Madeline as she climbs a mysterious mountain, confronting not only physical obstacles but also manifestations of her own inner struggles. Through tight mechanics and thoughtful storytelling, the game explores themes of perseverance, mental health, and what it means to move forward without leaving parts of yourself behind.
While Celeste can take 8–12 hours to complete, you do not need to finish the game to participate. Playing the early chapters is more than enough to engage with its ideas and contribute to discussion.
Discussion topics will include:
- The relationship between gameplay difficulty and narrative meaning
- How failure and repetition shape the player’s emotional experience
- Representations of anxiety and self-doubt
- The role of music and pacing in storytelling
- What it means for a game to be both mechanically demanding and emotionally accessible
As always, the goal is not to “beat” the game, but to explore how it works as a piece of interactive storytelling.
Oh, and one more thing: using Assist Mode is completely fair. This game can be intimidating. :)
