For our August Video Game Book Club meeting, we’ll be discussing Silent Hill 2, the acclaimed remake of one of the most influential psychological horror games ever created.
After receiving a letter from his deceased wife, James Sunderland returns to the fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill, hoping to see her one last time. Instead, he encounters unsettling figures, impossible places, and a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to the person he lost. As James searches for answers, the line between reality and nightmare begins to dissolve.
While Silent Hill 2 is often celebrated as a landmark horror game, its lasting impact comes from the questions it asks about grief, guilt, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. The remake brings this classic experience to a new audience with modern visuals, sound design, and gameplay while preserving the psychological depth that made the original so enduring.
Because the game can take 15–20 hours to complete, you do not need to finish it to participate. Playing the opening chapters—or enough to become immersed in the town and its mysteries—is more than enough to contribute to the discussion. Additionally, there are many complete walkthroughs of the game on Youtube, should you prefer to simply watch the horror.
Discussion topics will include:
- Psychological horror as a storytelling medium
- Symbolism in monsters, environments, and character design
- Themes of grief, guilt, memory, and redemption
- How atmosphere, music, and sound shape the player’s emotional experience
- The relationship between player interpretation and narrative ambiguity
As always, the goal is not simply to complete the game, but to explore how it uses interactivity to tell a story that could only exist as a video game.
