For our June Video Game Book Club meeting, we’ll be discussing What Remains of Edith Finch, a narrative-driven exploration game widely praised for its inventive storytelling and emotional depth.
In What Remains of Edith Finch, players return to the sprawling Finch family home to uncover the stories surrounding each family member’s life — and death. Through a series of imaginative interactive vignettes, the game explores memory, grief, mythmaking, and the ways families shape their own histories over generations.
While the game can be completed in roughly 2–4 hours, its structure and themes leave plenty to unpack long after the credits roll.
Discussion topics will include:

  • Environmental storytelling and the role of the Finch house itself
  • How gameplay mechanics change to reflect different perspectives and lives
  • The relationship between memory, tragedy, and family mythology
  • The blending of realism with surreal or symbolic imagery
  • Whether the game presents the Finch “curse” as supernatural, psychological, or something else entirely

As always, you do not need to finish the game to participate — simply play enough to form an opinion and join the conversation.
