A Fresh Look at TypeScript & Building a CDN w/ Node.js

Details

We've got a great Feature Talk for you this month! Lightning Talk spots available, so please reach out!

Feature Talk – Brady Holt – A Fresh Look at TypeScript

You’ve been seeing more and more about TypeScript lately but you might not have given it a serious try. We’ll take a fresh look at this strongly-typed, JavaScript superset and see what all the hype is really about and whether TypeScript makes sense for your next project. We’ll talk about the advantages it brings along with demonstrating some of the more interesting features it has to offer. We'll talk about developer tooling and ESNext support along with language features including generics, nullable types, type guards, and mapped types. Whether you've never tried TypeScript before or have used it some, this talk should give you a better sense of what TypeScript has to offer and help you make an informed decision about using it.

Feature Talk – Sebastiaan Deckers – Commons Host: Building a CDN with Node.js for the rest of the world

I will present Commons Host, a static site hosting & CDN service. It is a 100% FOSS product built with new Node.js tools at every layer: core API, edge servers, CLI tooling, frontend bundling, etc. I was fortunate to contribute to the HTTP/2 implementation in Node.js as part of this effort.

Some of the HTTP/2 specific features include:

  • Coalesced Connections: Solving the performance cost of 3rd party content in the browser.
  • Server Push: Using Manifests and Cache Digests to improve resource loading in the browser.
  • Shared Sessions: Proxy content efficiently using interleaved HTTP/2 streams over a shared session. Replaces the legacy HTTP/1 connection pool.

We'll be meeting at the very-welcoming office of Proof, downtown. Parking and validation available! Thanks to Proof for hosting! It's going to be a great event!

Parking Details:

  • Proof will be validating the parking for the event.
  • The parking garage is located at 508 Brazos St. and called “Littlefield Parking".
  • Bring your ticket into the meetup and we will have someone validate it for you.

Finding the Proof office:

  • The Proof office is located at 200 E. 6th St #310.
  • It’s on the north side of 6th street between B.D Rileys Pub and Friends bar.
  • You’ll see a sign that says “Hannig Row”. That’s the office.
  • Chris, one of the cofounders of Proof, will be at the door letting everyone in.
  • Look for a guy wearing a “Proof” t-shirt and the sidewalk sign that says “Node ATX”

See you there!

Matt
