What we're about

AVL Writers (formerly Asheville Writers) started some time ago with events across for the WNC region. As of spring 2022, it's a small, intimate week-to-week gathering of writers in Asheille, NC who are actively working on a piece with the intention of publishing (or not). This includes all formats: long-form fiction excerpts like novels, novellas, short stories, screenplays, poetry, flash fiction, etc. We are critique-based, but that is not all we have been so far.

We also encourage one another to reach out to other writing organizations in the area, e.g. Flatirons and NaNoWriMo as concerns our growth as authors and as a group.

The group is critique-based, meaning that most events will feature a short but clear-eyed critique of anyone's work who is willing to share it. So far Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Odd's Cafe has been our most consistent schedule, however, this is likely to change as the fall approaches.

We will strive to have also more purely fun gatherings on weekends, typically a Sunday or two per month. This could be a brunch, going to a play or movie having to do with writers or artists, attending an art gallery ... ideas flourish here, and we are unafraid to embrace them authentically.

AVL Writers: Critique at Good Ol' Odd's

Needs a location

Please come prepared to share your work at 6 pm, and please do not RSVP unless you are certain that you can make it.

No-shows with RSVPs attached to them take up room from those on the wait list.10 people max. Please DM or email me with questions.

We'll gather in the back area if there's room, or outside if there's space.

AVL Writers: Critique at Ramsey Library

Needs a location

New venue: Ramsey Library, 1st floor Tutorial room/collaborative space, 1 University Heights, Asheville, NC.

I graduated from here in 2014, so the presence of an Alum helps us get into this lovely space.

(Yes ... MeetUp says it's in the cafe. Cafe is attached to the library, and that's all Google is willing to recognize. We will meet in the Tutorial room if not too busy, or at one of the many desks around the 1st floor. DO NOT go upstairs or downstairs.)

Reference Desk has been notified of our plan to meet there, on Wednesday evening and possibly with regularity.

If you're not sure where we are, please ask them and tell them you're "with Lit and we're having a small meeting in the Tutorial room."

Parking: Visitor's Lot near the Highsmith Union. It's not big, I know, but it's unlikely with a group this small to be a major issue. I know it's a college campus so that will mean finding a spot and walking across the Quad towards the Library.

If you have issues or even find yourself getting ticketed, let me know. I will compensate you. The campus police are extremely nice and understanding. If safety is a concern for you, know that this is one of the safest places you can be in all of WNC!

There's always going to be at least one hassle/goof/pain-in-the-butt with ANY location we select. I'm just so tired of pressuring myself or others to shell out money to legitimize our presence in a Cafe or restaurant.

Rules: Yes, we have them. If you aren't familiar with them, please email me ([masked]) or Athena Anderson ([masked]).

See some you at Ramsey Library!
