What we’re about
Welcome to the Melbourne AWS User Group.
We are group dedicated to the cloud services provided by Amazon Web Services. Because we are specific to AWS we can go deep into some of the technical services provided by AWS and get some great insights into how their services work.
If you want to put your application in the cloud and have already chosen AWS, or if you already have applications in the AWS cloud, then this is a great group to get helpful insights and advice from other group members.
More information is available on our website.
The Melbourne AWS User Group is not affiliated with any organisations and is independent from Amazon.

See all- Melbourne AWS User Group #130 - September 2023NAB Events Hub, Melbourne, AL
Did the weather suddenly turn nice? Well, it's Melbourne so I'm sure that will fix itself soon enough. And when the shine of going out and about wears off, guess what's there? Indeed! Our September meetup! As usual on the last Wednesday of the month, which means 27 September, and we'll be at our usual location of the NAB Events Hub on 395 Bourke Street.
As a reminder, we will start with the food and socialising at 6 pm, but the actual contents of the meetup (and live stream) will begin at 6:30.
And as usual, I'd like to point out that if you are attending online only, please do not RSVP, as we use the RSVPs for catering purposes. Similarly, if you realise you can't make it after all, please change your RSVP as we don't want food to go to waste.
For the evening itself, after we've eaten and socialised, we have our usual intros and overview of the news. And after that we've got two great talks lined up. We'll start with Colin Andrews who will be covering maths, IAM, and how they intersect. What's not to love about a nerdy topic like that? This is then followed by returning speaker Renaldi Gondosubroto who will take us through the development of an anonymous chat forum. And, of course, we'll finish the night with our Who's hiring segment.
Our thanks to CMD Solutions for their continued sponsorship.
See below for the full agenda. The event will be streamed on YouTube as always:

# AWS IAM and Set Theory: understanding policies with mathematics
* Colin Andrews
Level 200
This presentation will complement a blog post of a similar title "AWS IAM and Set Theory: How do permissions in AWS really work?", which proposes new ways to think about writing IAM policies using logic borrowed from the mathematical topic of set theory.
I will briefly summarise the blog content, discuss the logic in more detail, present some use cases, and possibly cover how the theory applies to the resource and condition keys in policies.

# Building an Anonymous Chat Forum on AWS: From Idea to Deployment
* Renaldi Gondosubroto
Level 300
Dive into the creation of an anonymous chat forum based on technologies in AWS. We'll start by unpacking our unique blend of technologies and walk you through the architecture for the site: AWS Amplify, seamlessly integrated with Cognito for authentication, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL to manage user-generated content, and React.js for an intuitive frontend hosted on AWS S3. The robustness of our Node.js backend is ensured by AWS EC2, while AWS's Secrets Manager boosts security, housing and rotating essential credentials.
The heart of our session will delve into the hands-on process, highlighting both the capabilities of these services and the challenges encountered for this use case. With a live demo of the anonymous chat forum and code insights, the talk will bring you through how hurdles in error handling, data security, and user experience optimization have been navigated. Through a development lens, attendees will witness the transformation of a simple idea into a dynamic, secure, and scalable platform based on best practices.

We are always looking for speakers and believe everyone has an interesting talk hiding inside themselves. If you are interested in letting that talk out at a future event you can get in touch at the meetup, on the website, or reach out to @arjen or @bok on our Slack.
