  • OCT 28 – NOV 1 – El Chorro (Spain) and the infamous Caminito del Rey

    Needs a location

    £334.00

Backabush is heading to El Chorro in Andalucia in the south of Spain for some amazing hiking and to catch some last sunshine at the end of October!

During this 4 night mini-adventure we are planning to hike the infamous Caminito del Rey cliff-side path, once considered to be the world’s most hazardous footpath. The spectacular Caminito del Rey is a truly thrilling, cliff-side path on the edge of the famous El Chorro gorge, hanging 100m above the waters of the river Guadalhorce reservoir. The name derives from the original name of Camino del Rey (King's Pathway), abbreviated locally to el caminito. The walkway had fallen into disrepair and was partially closed for over a decade.

The entire route has been carefully restored, but although it's now much safer, one thing hasn't changed - the unique experience of strolling along walkways hanging over 100 metres up on a sheer cliff face. The views are unforgettable. The Caminito del Rey route is spectacular from beginning to end, running through cliffs, canyons, and a large valley. It crosses the landscapes of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a gorge carved out by the river Guadalhorce, with walls 700 metres high.

We will also enjoy some superb hiking in the rugged mountains surrounding the small village of El Chorro in the province of Malaga. This area is much loved by rock climbers for its vertiginous rock faces and stunningly beautiful turquoise coloured lakes bordered by pine forests.

The area is also inhabited by a wide variety of animal and plant species. With luck we might see highland birds like Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures, or golden eagles, and mammals such as wild boar and Iberian ibex.

Classic hiking routes around El Chorro include:

    • The historic Arab staircase and Pico Huma (1191m)
    • Tajo de la Encantada viewpoint and the Roman ruins of Bobastro

    Optional activities can include:

    • The El Chorro Via Ferrata - a thrilling 4h trip with a zip line and two Tibetan bridges
    • Kayaking or paddle boarding on the El Chorro lakes
    • Rock climbing
    • Yoga classes

This trip does not involve technical mountaineering but the hikes on the islands can be quite challenging so you need to have a good level of hiking fitness. A head for heights is also necessary in the mountainous terrain.

    Accommodation

We will be staying in lovely countryside accommodation just outside of the village of El Chorro. The property has an outdoor pool, pool table and yoga platform, set in a tranquil garden. It has lots of character and a relaxed atmosphere. A perfect retreat away from it all!

The beds are in shared rooms:

    • Bunk beds (3-4 bed dorm rooms) - £334

    WHAT IS INCLUDED:

    • 4 nights accommodation.

  • MARCH 18 - 25 - LA GOMERA - Isla Mágica (the magical island)

    Needs a location

    £584.00

Backabush is heading back to the Canary Islands to visit La Gomera!

La Gomera is known as "the magical island" or "the Canary island that time forgot" because of its incredible natural beauty.

The second-smallest of the seven Canary Islands - nearly circular and only 25 kilometres across - La Gomera feels like the island that time forgot. It's still possible to drive through soaring ravines and sleepy mountain villages down to deserted rocky beaches without encountering a single traffic light. It is unquestionably the most unspoilt islands of the Canary Islands, and is a walkers paradise. The landscape is characterized by rugged mountains, earth valleys and tropical misty forests.

The archipelago of the Canary Islands sit just off the coast of Africa and enjoy mild weather and sunshine throughout the winter months making them ideal for a hiking escape in March. There is a wealth of amazing hikes to explore.

We will first be staying for two nights in Los Cristianos, the main port town on Tenerife's south coast and a popular beach resort before heading over to La Gomera by ferry. Whale sightings are common during this sea crossing.

We have the following room options:

    Shared Twin Room - £584
    Private Single Occupancy - £748

From our accommodation in Tenerife (2 nights) we can enjoy one amazing day hike in the Teno Mountains or in the Parque National del Teide which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then we will base ourselves for 5 nights in the lovely port town of San Sebastián de La Gomera. We can then enjoy 5 days of spectacular hiking on La Gomera island.

La Gomera is home to the National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site of La Garanjonay, a natural jewel in the Canary Islands archipelago. Here we can find species that are otherwise extinct in most destinations, dense forests, deep ravines and a prehistoric landscape that has been sculpted over millions of years.

Come and join us for some welcome winter sun and fun in La Gomera!

  • APR 28 - MAY 2 (BANK HOLIDAY) TURKISH NORTH CYPRUS, MOUNTAINS & CRUSADOR CASTLES

    Needs a location

    £399.00

Backabush is heading to Northern Cyprus for some amazing hiking in the Besparmak mountains. A dramatic landscape dotted with ancient ruined crusader castles and abbeys!

    Nights - 4. Cost - £399.

Joins us for 4 nights over the Early May Bank Holiday to explore the rugged hills and mountains of the lesser known Turkish side of Cyprus, where time seems to have stood still. A perfect place for hikers to explore uncrowded trails through fabulous scenery.

We will be based in delightful bungalows (twin share rooms) in lovely family run accommodation just outside the town of Girne (still widely known by its Greek name Kyrenia), one of the most beautiful towns in Cyprus, owing to its picturesque harbour, mighty Venetian castle, and a backdrop of sharp and craggy mountains.

The Kyrenia Mountain range – also known as the ‘Five Finger’ mountains, runs for around 100 miles along the northern coast and is named after one of its most distinguishing features – a peak that resembles five fingers. During the spring, the Northern Cyprus Kyrenia mountains explode into colour with a profusion of wild flowers, making it the best time to hike here. The mountains have always been a line of defence for the island, and Crusader castles lie ready to be explored on its peaks.

Some of the castles we may hike to are:

    St Hilarion Castle

A crusader’s castle with a lot of history. St Hilarion is the most visited of the three Crusader castles in Cyprus. The fortress sits in a spectacular location on a steep limestone peak high above the harbour town of Girne. The picturesque castle is said to have been the inspiration for the Walt Disney production of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. There’s a fabulous panorama from the top and you can see why the 10th century castle played an important role in protecting the island from Arab attacks.

    Buffavento Castle

Buffavento is the highest and smallest of the three Crusader castles positioned along the spine of the the Kyrenia mountain range. Its name is believed to mean "buffeted by the wind", appropriately enough, given its position at a height of 955m. Due to the laborious ascent, Buffavento is the least visited of the mountain castles in Northern Cyprus but the panoramic 360 degree vistas from the top over the Mesaoria plain and the City of Lefkosa (Nicosia) are spectacular.

Our accommodation comprises of comfortable bungalows (twin share rooms) with living room and private terrace, situated around an outdoor pool which is surrounded by palm trees and offers mountain views. The perfect place to relax and take a dip after hiking.

In the evenings we will be able to enjoy the local Turkish-Cypriot cuisine which owes its heritage to a mixture of Mediterranean, Southern European and Middle Eastern influences and is known to be great value for money.

This trip does not involve technical mountaineering but the hikes on the islands can be challenging with ascents/descents between[masked]m so you need to have a good level of hiking fitness. A head for heights is also necessary in the mountainous terrain.

    WHAT IS INCLUDED:

  • MAY 13 - 20 - CAPPADOCIA, Turkey's Fairytale Valleys

    £569.00

Join Backabush for a week exploring the enchanting landscape of Cappadocia.

    Cost from £569 - 7 Nights - Group Size 17 - Cave Hotel Accommodation

The rocky valleys surrounding the town of Goreme in Cappadocia have been sculpted by the wind and rain over many thousands of years to create a truly unique geological landscape of intricate folds. This area is famous for it's distinctive tufas or 'fairy chimneys' as well as the many ancient cave dwellings, canyons and of course the vast numbers of hot air balloons that fill the dawn skies each day.

We have booked the exclusive use of one of Goreme's traditionally styled cave hotels, with bedrooms that are partly set back into the rock. We have options for shared twin rooms, private rooms and some larger, luxury private rooms. Our hotel has all the amenities that you would expect, en-suite rooms, Wi-Fi and air conditioning. There is also an outdoor terrace seating area that overlooks the town, the perfect spot to view the balloon fights each morning.

    Shared 4 bed room - £569 (Male)
    Shared twin room - £599
Private room - £699 (Fully booked)
Luxury private room - £739 (Fully Booked)

Our plan is to spend a week around Goreme with 5 full hiking days to explore the surrounding valleys and 1 rest day so we have the chance to take an optional hot air balloon ride.

Highlights of our suggested hiking itinerary include...

    • Red Valley & Rose Valley, a dreamy landscape in a beautiful crimson colour.
    • Love Valley & Honey Valley. Love valley has some of the most iconic, and also phallic, fairy chimneys in Cappadocia, hence the name.

  • JUNE 10 - 14 - TORRIDON (SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS)

    Needs a location

    £349.00

Backabush is going back to Scotland - this time to TORRIDON!

    Nights 4 - Group size 18 - Cost £349

Are you ready for the most spectacular hiking in mainland Britain? The Torridon mountains are legendary for having the most rugged mountains in mainland Scotland. This area of the Highlands is sandstone which has given the region a strikingly different appearance to the mountains further south. These hills are huge, brooding monoliths with tops crested in sparkling quartzite and have become somewhat of a mecca to British hill walkers. This will be a true mountain adventure!

Our plan is to spend 4 nights in the Torridon area at a superb, purpose built hostel located at the foot of the mountains close to the shores of Loch Torridon where we have booked private dorm rooms exclusively for our group. Although the village of Torridon is quite remote, our hostel is equipped with everything we need for our stay.

Classic hiking routes in this region include:

    • Beinn Alligin & the Horns of Alligin
    • Liathach
    • Coire Mhic Fhearchair
    • Slioch

This trip involves challenging routes through rugged and demanding mountain terrain and steep ascents so a good level of fitness will be necessary. You must also have a good head for heights as many of the best routes in the Torridon include a degree of exposure.

If you would like to enjoy a week long holiday in Scotland with more mountain adventures, this trip can be combined with our trip to the Isle of Skye: https://www.meetup.com/backabush/events/287980762/
