Winter Backpacking at Carson Pass
Details
The first snow storms of the season hit the Sierras the past 2 weeks. Lets do a winter backpacking trip at Carson Pass.
Weather
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=38.6696&lon=-119.9933#.Y2Ss4i-B2gQ (expect cold temps down in the 0~10F range)
Stats
6 miles RT 500 ft vertical (deep snow + high elevation will make this STRENOUS). Carson Pass is at 8500 ft and gets a lot of snow.
Itinerary
Leave Bay Area 6am on Saturday morning (4 hrs drive to Carson Pass) + hike in + camp + hike out and return to Bay Area on Sunday
What's the Plan?
- Add yourself to the waitlist if you're interested and ready to go with winter gear. Before you RSVP make sure your profile is updated with prior backpacking experience level. Its fine if you don't have deep winter snow camping experience as long as your general backpacking experience is good.
- Send me a detailed account of your winter gear after RSVP.
- We’ll use whatsapp for group comms and gear prep discussion
- Only ready and prepared members will be confirmed to the event (we will have min 3 and max 6 members. If we don't get at least 3 confirmed the event will be pushed forward to another date)
- On the Monday of the week I will call ranger and request a permit (if ranger decides to not issue a permit and/or a significant storm rolls in we can go to an alternate destination)
- Once the party members are confirmed I will reserve the permit
- Carpool: ping me if you need a ride (I'm driving from Menlo Park)
Gear Requirements
- Winter grade hiking gear
- Winter grade camping gear suitable for low temps (say 10F + some wind)
- ... not breaking down the details since this is a big topic. Anyone joining will need to have done their research or have prior experience to know what's needed. We'll go over each members gear list ahead of time to make sure we're all adequately prepared.
Costs
- Sno Park permit fee
- Gas money if carpooling (we can setup carpool after we've decided who is going)
[NOTE] This is NOT a professional guided trip. Please ensure you are adequately prepared before signing up for the trip. We will stay together as a group at all times and look out for each other.
