The Summer superhero flick season is officially underway, with an especially momentous return of Marvel's First Family on the silver screen with this month's "Fantastic Four: First Steps"! I'm sure many of you remember the previous attempts at adapting them for film, featuring familiar faces like Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan. But did you know that that in the late 80s, a German film company managed to obtain the film rights to the Fantastic Four, and in order to maintain those rights, they LEGALLY had to create a Fantastic four movie in 1992?
Signing on legendary B-Movie producer Roger Corman, they managed to create a film that some say is the best adaptation of F4 to date, only to then have the film prints bought and destroyed by Marvel executives before the film could even premiere! However, a VHS master of the film was leaked out, and the 1994 Fantastic Four movie has been an iconic piece of lost media ever since, with copies being passed around at conventions and talked about by nerds and lovers of Corman alike. A true case study for the importance of physical media preservation!
Plot: After losing his best friend in an attempt to harness cosmic energy, brilliant scientist Reed Richards charts a mission to space to honor his friend's legacy. However, when the mission backfires, he and his crew are exposed to radiation, giving them all fantastic powers! Now trapped as lab rats in the country of Latveria , the four have to find a way to use their new powers to escape. What could Dr. Doom, the enigmatic dictator of Latveria, want with them? And how does a mysterious, Mole-like Man who lives in the sewers play a part in it? Strap in, True Believers!
Outside food is allowed in the brewery/screening room, but be sure to grab a drink! The event is free and supporting the bar ensures we can keep it that way! Wild East Brewing has tons of great craft beers, but also offers wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options like Soda and NA Beers, so grab a drink and enjoy the movie!
The screening room will open at 8:00pm, seating is first come first served (the room is big, but the bar has a limit on the number of seats they can provide at Saturday events...). I'll have some fun stuff playing at 8, with the movie starting 20 minutes later.
