NORDIC MIDSOMMER CELEBRATION!

I'm looking forward to this - I do have a little Scandinavian in me so it will be fun to explore recipes for this traditional celebration! We also missed our Nordic "hygge" night this winter so this will be a fun summery replacement! Celebrated across Nordic countries, midsummer celebrates the longest day of the year - 24 hours of light - also known as "midnight sun" and "white night", celebrated in June! It includes Nordic food, the maypole (yes I will be decorating the pole in our room:):), music, games, bonfires, saunas, cold lake dips, and so much more! We will have some fun with our own indoor version of this celebration!

DRESS: Although it's not necessary, everyone can dress the part! Light summer clothing which varies from country to country ranging from traditional Scandinavian clothing, to 'regular casual summer dress' to white or light colored linen and floral dresses in celebration of 'white night'. A ring of flowers in the hair is also traditional ... if you want to go "all out", go for it! I can assure you I am going all out :). It will create the "Midsummer - White Night Vibe"!!

FOOD: There are many 'traditional' midsommer recipes along with traditional Nordic recipes below. Feel free to explore the links, or 'google it' yourself! Let's try and have a good balance of savory and sweet - it would be great if everyone could bring something for a true feast! We will be separating dinner and dessert in true midsummer fashion - so equal-ish amounts would be great!

COMMENTING: Please ONLY comment a dish if you are on the GOING list as indicated below. Thank you!

BAKERS: Choose a recipe - savory or sweet! Make sure to comment what you are bringing so we don't have duplicates!

TASTERS: Also comment! Please bring one of the following supply contributions to the Meetup: a small box of disposable eating utensils (white or clear), hot cups with lids, 9" or larger plates of any kind, cold cups, a pack of napkins (white), ground Maxwell House or Folgers Coffee - regular or decaf - (please do not bring other brands or special flavors since we are now sharing and replenishing supplies that also belong to the church), or tea bags. These donations will be integrated into the supplies that we share with the church for future use.

COMMENTS: Please note that the comments help us know what you're bringing but they also tell me that you are engaged with the group and planning on attending. Everyone on the going list should comment.

$ CONTRIBUTIONS: Attendees should contribute $3-$5 at each event unless you already gave me one lump sum (contribution box provided - honor system!). Meetup expenses add up, and the cost to organize a group increases each year. If you would like to see what your contribution is going towards, you can click on the link below (the link doesn't always work on mobile devices). All expenses from the beginning of this group are recorded. Online contributions are listed under "contributions". Specific "year long" donations are listed by person. Cash donations are listed under "other income" : https://www.meetup.com/Bakers-and-Tasters/money

RSVP:
*If you are a first timer and you add a +1 to your RSVP, please make sure your friend is female. We like to keep this meetup a ladies night out!

*Please change your rsvp ahead of time if you cannot attend. Please do not wait until the last minute. If you don't show up for a meetup or back out last minute, I may move you to the wait list for the next meetup to give others a chance.

PROVIDED:
*Serving utensils, plates, water, coffee, tea. I only ask that at the end of the night everyone clean up and take home their own serving dishes and leftovers. If you use one of our serving utensils, please wash it and put it back. You may bring a take-out container in case their are leftovers.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Your dish or your contribution
  • Serving utensils (or you can grab one from our collection, use it, wash it, and return it to the box at the end of the night.)
  • A TAKE OUT CONTAINER - Take out containers are no longer provided. If you are interested in leftovers, please be sure to pack your own container!
  • $3-$5 donation (unless you gave me a lump sum) - VenMo code will also be available.
  • YOUR APPETITE! YOUR SMILE!

Looking forward to seeing everyone!! Happy Baking! :):)
