Just for Fun Mahjong is for players who know how to play American Mahjong independently and are looking for a friendly, relaxed game without the pressure of advanced or tournament-paced play.

You don't have to be the fastest player at the table or have every strategy figured out. Some players may still be building speed and experience, while others may simply prefer a more relaxed style of play.

This group is a good fit if you:

• Know the basic rules of American Mahjong
• Can read and navigate the current NMJL card
• Can choose and play your own hand independently
• Understand the Charleston, exposures, Jokers and calling for Mahjong
• Don't require guidance throughout the game
• Are comfortable playing with people who may have different playing speeds and styles
• Want to enjoy Mahjong without worrying about being "advanced"

This is independent social play rather than a teaching session, so there is no instruction or guided strategy during the game. Of course, we're all human — an occasional question or "Wait, can I do that?" happens at every Mahjong table! 😄

There is no fee for Just for Fun Mahjong.

The emphasis here is exactly what the name says: having fun. Come enjoy the tiles, the conversation, a little friendly competition, and the company of other Mahjong players.

Ready for a faster-paced game with experienced players — with a few quarters on the line?

This group is for confident American Mahjong players who are comfortable playing independently and enjoy the challenge of a quicker, more competitive game. We play for quarters, adding a little extra fun and friendly competition to each hand.

You do not need to be a tournament player to join us! However, you should be comfortable playing at a tournament-ready level.

This game is a good fit for you if you:

• Play independently without needing guidance or help choosing a hand
• Are very comfortable reading and navigating the current NMJL card
• Can make Charleston and in-game decisions efficiently
• Understand exposures, joker exchanges, calling rules and defensive play
• Are comfortable changing direction when a hand isn't developing
• Keep your play moving without lengthy pauses between picks and discards
• Enjoy a faster pace and a little friendly competition

The goal isn't to rush — it's to keep the game moving.

### Playing for Quarters

Bring your quarters! We use the traditional quarter system to add a little extra excitement to the game. The stakes are small, the bragging rights may be considerably larger. 😄

This is still a friendly, social game. Playing for quarters simply adds another layer of fun for players who enjoy a bit of competition.

If you're still developing strategy, regularly need help finding or choosing a hand, or prefer a slower-paced game, one of our other Bams, Cracks, Dots games will probably be a more comfortable fit for you right now.

now you're ready to become a stronger player!

This guided-play group is designed for players who understand the basics of American Mahjong and can play a game, but are ready to move beyond simply completing a hand and begin developing strategy.

We'll play full games while exploring the decisions that can make a difference in your play.

This is a great place to work on:

• Reading the NMJL card more effectively
• Seeing possibilities in the tiles you've been dealt
• Choosing between possible hands
• Making stronger Charleston decisions
• Knowing when to stay with a hand — and when to change direction
• Using exposures and Jokers more strategically
• Paying attention to what is happening around the table
• Beginning to develop defensive play
• Building confidence and speed naturally as your skills grow

Unlike our independent-play groups, questions are welcome! We'll have opportunities to stop, talk through decisions, look at different possibilities and learn from what happens during actual play.

You don't need to be fast. You don't need to have all the answers. That's what this group is for.

However, you should be comfortable with the basic mechanics of the game and able to play without needing step-by-step guidance through each turn. If you've recently completed a beginner class and still want help putting all the pieces together, our Step-Up Guided Play group is the perfect place to start.

This is about adding more tools to your Mahjong toolbox, developing your own playing style and becoming a more confident player — one hand at a time.

Guided Play Fee: $5 per player
This is a guided learning session rather than a regular open-play game. I'll be available throughout our time together to answer questions, talk through different options, and offer strategy and guidance as situations come up during actual play.
The $5 fee helps distinguish our guided learning sessions from our regular independent-play games while keeping these opportunities affordable and accessible.

You've learned how to play — now it's time to get comfortable playing!

Practice & Play is designed for newer players who have completed a beginner American Mahjong class but aren't quite ready to play completely independently.

There's a big difference between learning the rules and sitting down at the table where suddenly everything has to come together. This is your place to practice what you've learned, ask questions, make mistakes, and gain experience in a relaxed and supportive setting.

During our games, I'll be right there to help with things like:

• Navigating the NMJL card and finding possible hands
• Working through the Charleston
• Deciding what to keep and what to pass
• Remembering rules as they come up during actual play
• Exposures, calling tiles and Joker exchanges
• Recognizing when a hand may no longer be working
• Becoming more comfortable making your own decisions
• Building confidence and independence at the table

Questions are encouraged! In fact, this is exactly the place to ask them.
We'll stop when we need to, talk things through, and use situations that happen during our games as learning opportunities. There is no expectation that you play quickly or have everything figured out.

### Guided Play Fee: $10 per player

Practice & Play is a hands-on guided learning session rather than a regular open-play game. I'll be actively helping throughout the session as you put what you've learned into practice.

The goal is simple: to help you reach the point where you don't need me anymore! 😄

When you're comfortable playing independently, you can move into Just for Fun Mahjong or, if you're ready to start developing your strategy, Beyond the Basics: Strategy & Skills.
