Building Your Mahjong Game: Strategy & Skills

You know how to play Mahjong —
now you're ready to become a stronger player!

This guided-play group is designed for players who understand the basics of American Mahjong and can play a game, but are ready to move beyond simply completing a hand and begin developing strategy.

We'll play full games while exploring the decisions that can make a difference in your play.

This is a great place to work on:

• Reading the NMJL card more effectively
• Seeing possibilities in the tiles you've been dealt
• Choosing between possible hands
• Making stronger Charleston decisions
• Knowing when to stay with a hand — and when to change direction
• Using exposures and Jokers more strategically
• Paying attention to what is happening around the table
• Beginning to develop defensive play
• Building confidence and speed naturally as your skills grow

Unlike our independent-play groups, questions are welcome! We'll have opportunities to stop, talk through decisions, look at different possibilities and learn from what happens during actual play.

You don't need to be fast. You don't need to have all the answers. That's what this group is for.

However, you should be comfortable with the basic mechanics of the game and able to play without needing step-by-step guidance through each turn. If you've recently completed a beginner class and still want help putting all the pieces together, our Step-Up Guided Play group is the perfect place to start.

This is about adding more tools to your Mahjong toolbox, developing your own playing style and becoming a more confident player — one hand at a time.

Guided Play Fee: $5 per player
This is a guided learning session rather than a regular open-play game. I'll be available throughout our time together to answer questions, talk through different options, and offer strategy and guidance as situations come up during actual play.
The $5 fee helps distinguish our guided learning sessions from our regular independent-play games while keeping these opportunities affordable and accessible.
