Bangkok Walking Adventures

Hi all, This walk is a bit temple-heavy, as the name suggests, so this may not appeal to everyone. There are over 40000 temples in Thailand, and about 20% of those are no longer in use. What happens to those temples? Why were they abandoned? Can you still visit them and what happens if you do? Can a temple be torn down and why or why not? What do you need if you want to 'reopen' a temple? Can anyone use these unused temples? All these questions and more will be answered during this walk. There are many temples to be found, if you know where to look, but we visit several on the Thonburi side, plus a few other interesting places. This walk is an approximately 5.6km. Our walk will take us around 3 hours and we'll be walking through small sois, with some temples, mosque and local neighborhoods. We're meeting MRT sanamchai take exit 5 to Rajinee pier. Then we will take express boat to tewet pier. We will finish near Pinkloa pier. So you can take the express boat back to sapan taksin. For the late-comers, we usually wait for 5minutes after the starting time, but then we have to leave unfortunately. We'd really enjoy it if as many people as possible can join, coz we've always had a good crowd of group members with interesting and fun stories to share and questions to ask. We expect nothing less from you this time!! :) We will end the walk near Pin kloa pier where you can take the boat back to Sathorn. As usual, kindly prepare 300 THB to join the tour. Samut Prakan is situated just north of the Gulf of Thailand. The old section of the district is still referred to as Pak Nam, which means "river mouth”. Since the city is located as the frontier. Then there were many old forts along the river to defense Siam from the invaders. This time we will visit the 2 old forts 1. Phi Suea Samut Fort or the butterfly ocean fort which had been built since king rama II. He also commanded to install the "disappearing gun" 2. Phra Chedi Klang Nam’, or Pagoda in the river. The island was partly natural caused by the accumulation of sand brought down by the flood waters. Over the years the river has silted up even more causing the island to become part of the west bank. 3. Phra Chulachomklao Fort is located on the river mouth of the Chao Phraya River. It was built in the reign of King Rama V to protect the country from an invasion of European countries during the time of colonization. This fort was used to fight against the enemies in The Franco-Siamese War in 1893 when Kingdom of Siam was facing the invasion of two powerful countries. 4. A decommissioned ships which was in service for the longest period of the navy, HTMS Maeklong.
We will have sea food lunch at Thai Royal Navy club by the river mouth.
As always, please bring 450THB for your tour guide and all transportation costs. And as with every other previous walk, we would like to ask to PLEASE leave home on time. When that should be, depends on where you live, but unless you live nearby, we suggest leaving AT LEAST an hour beforehand. The guide can wait for 5-10minutes but then the group will leave.
